Solid effort from a classic, even tempered vintage…this likely spent approx 8 mon in barrel, and the downward slope is evident of less tannic input. Nevertheless, and a nice stewed red fruit core is delish as a sipper or with lighter proteins. Acids have waned a bit to far for serious food cleanup. Our house made Thai coconut beef curry soup was even a little too much, but it still was delicious to have in between long bites and afterwords with Keylime pie. This is my aging/cellar project… Learn how vintages and terroir match with winemaking and longevity. Lesson learned here… as the 2010 is the benchmark of a plus Merlot from the Monticello AVA. The 2010 is twice the wine that this is… Emphasizing the quality of the vintage vis-à-vis 2012 — 4 years ago
Really enjoyed the balance of fruit and oak - good for a cooler day when you still want a white. Not ideal summer drinking wine — 5 years ago

Very nice Virginia white blend. 43% Viognier, 37% Chardonnay and 20% Petite Manseng. Pleasant lemony and white flower notes on the nose. Buttery apples and pears on the pallet. Medium body and crisp acidity. Just a hint of oak. — 8 years ago
2023 Vintage and is our first try with this wine. Light and enjoyable Pinot Noir with tastes of plum, berries and oak. Delicious will buy again! — 7 months ago
Old Speckled Hen is a favourite. It's malty, slightly sweet with a nice hint of caramel. A good solid old fashioned English pint. — 4 years ago
Blackberry bramble, baked black cherry and plum, hints of maraschino, mint and menthol, bell pepper and geranium, cedar, tobacco, and bakers vanilla with whiffs of aged leather jacket on the nose. Blackberry, cherry, juicy raspberry, vanilla extract and weak black tea on the palate with a medium heavy body but a medium short finish. Overall a great wine for pumpkin pie brunch on Christmas morning (no it’s not too early). Merry Christmas! — 5 years ago
2012. 9.5. Outstanding: a mouthful of ripe red and blue fruits, tar, licorice and other earthy funk. So smooth and complex, evolves every hour. I slightly prefer the 2011 Ca del Merlo as the CdM is a bit longer and structured but both are classics. $79 at Plucky, Bottle King. — 6 years ago

Incredible Washington State Syrah that’s ready to drink. Bright red fruit and cola on the nose which transitions to dried red fruits on the pallet. Hints of earth, tobacco, cinnamon and vanilla on the finish. Smooth tannins and long finish. Let it breathe! Thanks Petey! Revisited in September 2024! Aging gracefully. Such a beautiful Syrah! — 7 years ago

The “King of Chardonnay” Mike Grgich farms w/o pesticides and certified organic. Aged 10 months, no MLF. Medium lemon color with aromas of stone & citrus fruits. On the palate flavors of apple, apricot & lemon citrus flavors, with honeysuckle, vanilla & toasty oak notes. Nice balance with acidity on long finish with a tangy mineral ending. Not your typical CA Chard, very nice! Worth the price! — 5 years ago
Time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Here is a tasty one from Virginia.
Dark ruby in color with a nice reddish rim.
Fruity nose with blueberries, currants, bing cherries, honeysuckle, light oak, red candy, spices, dark coffee, vanilla, dark chocolates, light vegetables and black pepper.
Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity and pretty legs.
Dry on the palate with cherries, sweet strawberries, black currants, light wood, spices, black pepper, earth, bitter herbs and tobacco leaf.
Medium plus in finish with soft tannins and tangy raspberries.
This is a very interesting wine from Virginia. A nice Bordeaux blend that warrants food, although pretty nice by itself too. Tangy and soft, with a nice mouthfeel and mild complexity.
Needs 30 minutes to open up properly, but so much nicer after 90 minutes in a decanter, when it really comes together.
Could be mistaken for a California Bordeaux blend, except for the honeysuckle nose, that i usually find in wines from the Southeast of the US.
Nice and engaging with lively acidity and a tangy finish.
Would be nice to see how it ages in the next 5 years.
I enjoyed it with Brie cheese.
A blend of 41% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc, 23% petit verdot, and 4% Malbec.
13.6% alcohol by volume.
90 points.

Wow did this age well! This is a 27 year old wine and has some of the Penzias dry creek valley distinctive green bell pepper but so smooth. Makes one realize the value of aging wines. — 6 months ago
