Copain

Harrison Clarke Santa Ynes Valley Syrah 2006

My first anything from this winery, this was delicious. At 19 years old- still bringing it -the fruit and tannin factors that count. A joy to drink. — 4 days ago

Lawrence Harrison Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

9.1

Potluck dinner at Butch. A surprisingly balanced complex low alcohol (13ABV) for NAPA Cab. Bright dark fruit notes on nose that carried over to lively lifted palate and good finish. 17 years! — 7 months ago

Antica Terra

Obelin Pinot Noir 2018

Wow. From Maggie Harrison at Antica Terra, this is one of the best ones I’ve had from that winery. It doesn’t quite have the depth and complexity of her top-end wines (e.g., Cerras)…but it is also spectacular at this young of an age (as opposed to the higher end ones, which I think need several years in bottle before they really start to sing). In this regard, this wine is kind of like an off-scale Rosso di Montalcino that you enjoy while you wait for the brunellos to come of age. This wine was fantastic. Amazing fruit, perfect balance, and expanded beautifully on the palate. Just terrific. — 4 years ago

Simpatico Rutherford Estate Bottled Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc 2020

Solid wine from Bill Harrison. Deep purple color. Aromas of raspberry, blackberry, earthy, dust notes and spice box. Great wine with the pipe. Loads of dark fruit and blue fruit on the palate - nice tannins. Cheers! — 7 months ago

Napa Valley Petit Verdot 2013

Not too often do you get to drink 100% petit Verdot. My last bottle after 2-3 the last few years. Double decanted, then consumed from bottle over the course of 6hrs.

Special anniversary bottling. 36 months in oak. Right off the bat, I’d say the wine likely needed/benefitted from that amount of oak due to how brash PV can be solo, but I’d also say it’s probably going to cause the tannin to outlive the fruit. Not as black as I expected in the glass, more of a deep red-purple. Aromatics of ripe red and black berry fruits, baking spices, dark cocoa, and dark espresso. For being all PV slathered in a lot of oak, it’s very elegant on the palate…seems like a merlot/Mourvèdre hybrid with its black cherry cordial, chocolate and slightly smoked meat notes. There’s a unique tangy-ness to the fruit, and a lot of tannin at the finish. No rush, but if you want a good bit of fruit to balance things out, maybe consume in the next 3-5yrs.

@Dawn E. : You certainly don’t see PV on its own very often!

@Hugh O'Riordan : Same here. Their Simpatico is quite the value wine.

Antica Terra

Botanica Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2017

One of America’s best, in winemaker Maggie Harrison. Great to find this on a list with a bit of age. There’s such a beguiling combination of savory earth, mineral and rich cherry fruit flavors, with killer concentration, a plush texture and serious length. Top notch Domestic Pinot for sure. — 4 months ago
