Franchetti Sicilia Petite Verdot Cesanese 2014

Dark Ruby with youthful purple notes - very dense almost black. After decanting a whiff of high quality French oak. Black and blue fruits. Might have opened this a little young. It’s full bodied and powerful. 70% Petit Verdot, 30% Cesanese, somewhat of a unicorn - I doubt if I could find this in Australia. Bought at the Cellar door on a Sicily tour with Scud MW at Franchetti on the favoured northern slopes of Mount Etna. In a blind tasting I would pick this as Bordeaux. The fruit richness dominates and doesn’t allow much Etna derived volcanic minerality to show through. Much riper and richer than you would expect from an Etna wine. This is the premium cuvée from Franchetti. Would love to try another one in 5 years if I had one. — 7 months ago

Another reminder of criminally undervalued Etna wines are in both quality and price. Ashey light red fruit with some spice notes carry from sip to finish. Silky smooth and elegant a real winner from Franchetti that is drinking beautifully right now. Grapes grown on 70-100 year vines at altitude with a little 🌋🌋🌋 magic thrown in for good measure. — 7 years ago

Not that I am complaining about the price, hope they stay where they are!

Nose is open and full on fruit. Palate beautifully balanced and poised, hinting Napa, but more fresh, more juicy and more bite. Mineral and earthy elements starting too emerge.
Start drinking them NOW. And in the next ten years.
Thank you so much for this wine, Mr. Franchetti 🙏🏻

Franchetti Terre Siciliane Red Blend 2014

100% Petit Verdot matured in new French Oak. Cedary Harmonious and Delicious. Only 3500 bottles made so it is a rarity. Not cheap at 120 Euros. None would get to Australia I would think. Excellent Wine. — 7 years ago

Interesting blend from Franchetti wineyards on Etna slopes. Style is a little bit too mineral for me. — 7 years ago

Considering what a hard on Franchetti has for powerhouse Bordeaux, it’s a welcome surprise that his Etna wines are so lean and transparent. Curious what is the prime drinking window for these, what is gained with a few more years and what is compromised.
