Fighting Cock

Okanogan Estate & Vineyards

Merlot 2011

My last bottle of this, and maybe one of the last in the world. Rusty edge. Brownish. Smells of barns, soil and earthy stuff. With forest wild berries. Complex AF nose. Flavors are lovely with coffee and mocha hints fighting with the well expressed fruit. Aged amazingly. Balanced. Perfectly balanced. This is as good as any French Boudreaux I’ve had. Aged well. So sad this wine is no longer in existence. — 2 months ago

We have one or 2 left; and I hope each shows as well; teeth staining, palate coating black cherry and raspberry wonder that left us fighting over the last drops — 2 years ago

Perfect cork, I bought this from Benchmark 🤷‍♂️ a couple years ago and stored it at the proper temp since. Definitely wasn’t bad, just way disappointing vs the bottle I had a couple of years ago. Definitely not a 100 pointer IMO. I thought the fruit was awkwardly advanced - too plummy/raisiny.

@Eric S Maybe, the fault of the previous owner. I bought some Rostaing Ampodium from K&L’s auction site awhile back, bottles looked perfect, fill was full, cork fine but, the wine baked from ill storage.

Could be. Wouldn’t be the first time I was “benchmarked”

Abadia Retuerta

Selección Especial Sardon de Duero Tempranillo Blend 2016

Expressive nose of dark fruit, syrah fighting over Tempranillo. Dark, blackberries and liquorice, ripe dark cherries, pencil lead, chocolate. Fine tannins, I feel the alcohol, that dominates freshness, must be close to 15. Solid dark, great wine yet I miss freshness. — 3 months ago

Casanuova delle Cerbaie

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 1999

Nose has ripe plum, cedar shavings, dried blackberry, over-ripe black cherry, crushed black currant, menthol syrup and dried violets.

Palate has dried black currant, moist soil, cedar shavings, moist cigar, ripe blackberry, dried black cherry, rose hip tea with light tannins.

A beautiful cork, almost no soak; pulled clean with a standard screw. This is really in the zone tonight after a 6H decant. Drink 2022-2028 from proper storage.

Paired to Allen Bros USDA Prime Hanger with Dijon/Rosemary/Garlic/Lemon Zest marinade. Grilled to great 130° centers, 10m rise/rest to absolute perfection.
(I was honestly fighting with two cats to eat dinner tonight.)

Oak Farm Vineyards

Lodi Barbera 2018

Classic side pose (my left side photographs better) and added earring fun. Classic Italian grape added Lodi fun. I’m verily into it. One must mix things up. Studying Champagne pest-fighting technique earlier I learned that “sexual confusion” is the new pesticide there (this is not a joke) so maybe varietal location confusion is the new vaccine? I wish.
Anyway this also has about 12% Petite Sirah and also was in some new oak and is indelibly new world in a way I like. So much cola and vanilla and deep ripe red cherries but something. Some kick. Some oomph. That would make me say...not a pinot noir? If blind tasted.
I dunno it is yummy and apparently there is a guy who comes to the Oak Farm (shoutout to them having a woman winemaker on team) tasting room every day-ish for lunch who has a glass of this and takes the rest home. I wouldn’t mind more. More earrings. More wine? Okay

Guffens-Heynen

Le Chavigne Mâcon-Pierreclos Chardonnay 2004

A day opened from another dinner, and shared during our cheese course. Honestly didn't focus much on this wine after the insane Comté and 13' Les Chalasses Marnes Bleues pairing. Plus, let's not forget about the battering of Rieslings that came before. One taste and I knew this just didn't have a fighting chance during the night. Too rich and creamy to match the energy of the Rieslings, yet not quite rich enough to match the 09' Lafon Perrieres. Nothing wrong per say, but it was just so average among the other wines of the night. Another one to look into again on better circumstances. — a year ago
