Not a great vintage at Fritz Haag, but that doesn’t mean you don’t still get excellent wine. I’ve heard FH vintages of this era incorporate a lot of very young replanted vines. Perhaps that’s the issue. At 28 years there’s not much sweetness left, but, there’s sufficient delicacy, finesse, and nuance, to pull it through precisely with conviction. — 5 years ago
Group BD dinner 6/9 FH. Two bottles down. Good balanced Pinot with acids and hints of earth on top of the new world fruit. — 7 years ago
12% natural Verdelho from California, might have guessed Burgundy blind. Waxy texture, bright fruit, richness. F’n delicious. FH easily becoming one of my favorite wine makers. — 8 years ago

A bout between 2013 Washington Syrahs for a New Years celebration. K Vintners Motor City Kitty vs Gramercy Forgotten Hills. When comparing these two, I can't help but think of the show Stranger Things. These two wines are parallel universes, and it starts with the color. The MCK is a dark, deep purple, while he FH is medium purple. On the nose, the MCK gives dark red fruit and a dirty, spicy note as if you just went out to the garden and picked a jalapeño, some cilantro, celery and grabbed a handful of black raspberry and a plum and rubbed them all in your hand. The FH on the other hand is fresh and vibrant with red fruit, cured meats and savory herbs. On the palate, MCK has pruney raspberry, plum skin, with pepper and earth greenness. The FH has bright red fruits - strawberries, raspberries wrapped in plum skin with a dash of pepper and tar - with medium plus acid and great grip. Depending on you mood or palate, if you're in a mood for a dark, dirty Syrah go for the MCK, and a bright fresher Syrah for FH. Both great! — 9 years ago

100% Alvarelhão. Had to look this one up- an Iberian port grape, grown in Alta Mesa, SE of Napa. 12.5%. 100% spontaneous fermentation, 100% stems, 20 day maceration. all stainless. Hipster level is off the charts. FH continues to slay. — 7 years ago
