Tasted at the winery with winemaker César Deriaux, the 2018 L‘Étoile Savagnin is delicious. It has aged for 3 years under a veil of flor in a dedicated part of their cellar which is a bit warmer and drier than the rest. It wafts from the glass with a wide array of nutty aromas, bread dough, bruised apple, dried ginger and a pinch of curry. The powerful mouthfeel is driven by excellent flavor concentration and balanced by lively acids. A lingering saltiness marks the complex finish and calls for a refill. — a year ago
Great with a tasty curry — 2 years ago
Nicely blended with some ripe black fruit. Leather, vanilla, chocolate, oak. Nice structure for a big ripe fruit cab. — 3 years ago
Chilled and opened about an hour before dinner and allowed to gently come to temp. Served alongside charcoal grilled Thai sausage, sticky rice, coconut Thai curry, herb salad, shallot, lime, garlic, chiles. Straw color, off-dry and a perfect pairing with the first course. Lychee, honey, white flowers and great acid. This is the kind of synergy you dream for in a wine pairing. Drink now but I expect this will drink well for a long time. Quite possibly the best experience I’ve ever had with Gewurztraminer. — 15 days ago
First bottle of my 2019 WSU Auslesen from Prüm, and only my second ever Auslese from the estate. I think I knew what to expect from this wine, and sure enough it’s really closed down at the moment, with some spellbinding characteristics that need time to knit together. There isn’t a great deal to the nose, but the palate is gorgeous, very tropical, sweet but featherlight, with some pleasing bitter orange flavour that appears after two hours of air. It seems quite low in acidity, a characteristic of the vintage, and slightly incomplete at present but a joy to drink and a great match for Thai curry.
Eleven more bottles in this case and I shan’t open the next for another five years at least! — 2 years ago
Balanced acidity, intriguing nose, and nice fruit notes. A very well-crafted wine. Was great with spicy green Thai curry. — 3 years ago
The 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru certainly has one of the more attractive bouquets with redcurrant and cranberry, a touch of tobacco and marine aromas (cockle sheds I used to play on in the Thames Estuary). The palate is well balanced, with a touch of curry leaf on the entry and more black than red fruit. The 2014 has a firm grip with a noticeable backbone, yet the finish has plenty of freshness. Drinking well now, but there are a few years left to enjoy. (Neal Martin, Vinous, June 2024)

You shouldn’t ever drink Mosel this young, but what the Hölle. This has all the baby fat of a young Spätlese, with great concentration (2019 for ya) and complexity. The overriding note for me is one of orange zest, marmalade even, contributing in a big way to the gorgeous aromatics. The palate is intense, juicy, perhaps a little low in acidity but making up for it in bitter lemon-ness - or something like that.
Great fun to drink now with a Thai curry, but I’ll mark this case with a big DNT (do not touch), in red ink, until 2030.

Chilled and opened about an hour before dinner and allowed to gently come to temp. Served alongside charcoal grilled Thai sausage, sticky rice, coconut Thai curry, herb salad, shallot, lime, garlic, chiles. Tonight, this bottle was nothing short of remarkable. A deep golden color with gorgeous notes of squishy tropical fruit, white flowers, and turmeric. Wooly and waxy with acid for dayzzz. Stunning now but this bottle would show well through 2029 without breaking a sweat. — 15 days ago
