Domaine Armand David

Comte Armand

Clos des Epeneaux Monopole Pommard 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2013

Tasted blind. Medium light garnet , showing more age than wine 1 , quite wide garnet terracotta rim . More spice , with a sweet tobacco , dried raspberry , some cherry and earthy herbal , black tea notes . This is more tertiary than 1 wine . On the palate this also has quite high acidity, lightly gritty tannin with dried cherry , herbal hints . Quite fresh herbal tinged finish . Ok length . This improved quite a bit with air , showing more fruit and floral character after a while . This is probably close to peak drinking now but no rush should continue to show well over the next 5-10 years or so — 5 days ago

Clos St. Jacques Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Pinot Noir 1999

A fantastically complex and profound nose. Dark gnarly fruit, some black cherry and complex herbal notes. Lovely fruit and getting better by the minute in the glass. Glorious as always. — 13 days ago

Gevrey-Chambertin Pinot Noir 2020

9.2

The aromatics are beautiful. The soft, mid dark spices are delicate, swooning and inviting. Slightly candied plum to pudding , blackberries, black cherries, baked strawberries, black raspberries, hint of charcoal, some of the most beautiful baking spices-gentle cinnamon, soft clove, dash of nutmeg, hint of vanillin, forest floor w/ some dry leaves, wafting, understated, dry herbs-sage, mocha powder, some caramel notes, slightly candied to withering; dark flowers, red roses framed in soft lavender & violets.

Beautifully lush entry with some powdery M dry yet velvety tannins. Slightly candied plum to pudding, blackberries, black cherries, baked strawberries, black raspberries, hint of charcoal, some of the most beautiful baking spices-gentle cinnamon, soft clove, dash of nutmeg, hint of vanillin, perhaps the most beautiful, delicately layered spices I’ve had in a red burgundy, dark chocolate baking bar to cake, moist clay with grey volcanic minerals, limestone powder, forest floor w/ some dry leaves, wafting, understated, dry herbs-sage, mocha powder, some caramel notes, slightly candied to withering; dark flowers, red roses framed in soft lavender & violets, round acidity, balance for days, gently structured/tensioned, elegantly polished finish that lasts minutes and lands on micro grained spices.

Hard not to give this a 93 but it is not quite there yet but will get there in another 3-5 yrs with a total 15 yrs plus of good drinking.

Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2002

A gloriously deep and intense nose. Roses and sweet fruit. Plum and violet and black cherry. Lush and round and soooo long. A gamey undertow. The essence of Chambertin. Amazing but very young — 13 days ago

03 wasn’t nearly as good this week. Best label in wine!

Inkblot Lodi Cabernet Franc 2021

Clear, deep ruby in color; on the nose, it's clean with pronounced primary and secondary aromas of blackberries, black cherries, and wood smoke; on the palate, dry with high acidity, high tannins, high alcohol, full body, and pronounced intensity primary and secondary flavors of black currants, red bell peppers, black pepper, and crushed gravel with a long finish. This wine is intense and complex, but a little high in alcohol. Overall, I rate this wine as very good. It may need a little more time to open up. — 9 days ago

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Pinot Noir 1996

1996 Domaine Armand Rousseau Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Clos de la Roche, situated in Morey-Saint-Denis, is the most renowned and the largest Grand Cru vineyard of the village. Its terroir is consequently exceptional, yielding wines with striking acidity, remarkable concentration, and a structure that is powerful yet displays extraordinarily refined tannins. It is often considered one of Burgundy's most compelling wines, masterfully combining power with elegance.

The style neither mirrors the robust, muscular, and overtly powerful character typical of its northern neighbour, Gevrey-Chambertin, nor does it precisely replicate the extreme perfume, elegance, and delicacy that define its southern neighbour, Chambolle-Musigny. Instead, Clos de la Roche is the quintessential synthesis of strength and finesse—boasting a solid backbone alongside intricate depth of aroma and texture. Thanks to its pronounced acidity, one should not open a bottle without allowing for at least 15 years of ageing.

Upon opening, after 30 minutes the nose offered aromas of ripe black cherry, wild strawberry, sour plum, rose, and violet. After an hour, further notes of truffle, forest floor, leather, and spice developed. However, the minerality I expected remained elusive.

The bottle's condition was unfortunately not optimal. It lacked the sustained aromatic evolution and explosive bouquet I had anticipated. This fatigue and muted character were likely a result of its shipment from the United States.
