Deep purple color. Aromas of blueberry, chocolate and herbs/eucalyptus. Nice blue and black fruit on the palate, cocoa notes and nice tannins. Really good Cab!

Been Away Too Long Denner Vineyard Mourvedre 2018

This is actually Ryan’s “Been Away Too Long” bottling, a 100% mourvedre sourced from Denner. If you don’t know these wine, do yourself a favor and try a few bottles. In my opinion he makes the best pure mourvedre outside of France. Unlike most mourvedres, Ryan’s are elegant - more like a grenache - but with great depth of flavor. His wines are very approachable when young, but definitely put on some weight and depth with a few years in the bottle, so my rating will absolutely go up with time. Terrific wines from a small, excellent winery in Paso. Check it out! — 5 years ago

9.1

20230916 Hotel Arancio, Ascona, 1. Agility Day

Nice wine from 2020 with herber Note from start, deep red color, some taste of chocolate and berry.
Sehr dunkles Rubinrot, die Nase noch etwas verhalten, Noten von Pfeffer, Erde, Cassis und Pflaume, am Gaumen wuchtig mit viel Konzentration, deutliche Holznoten, ein kraftvoller Wein.
Invites to drink.

Maison Mason Vineyard Ugni Blanc

The new vintage of Ryan Pease’s flagship white, this is off-scale good. Anthony Yount of Denner/Kinero/Royal Nonesuch told me he thinks Ryan’s ugni blanc is one of if not the best white in Paso…and I’m inclined to agree. Just fantastic! — 4 years ago

Quite the compliment. Can it be purchased online? I’ve enjoyed Kinero’s Grenache Blanc.

And what is the profile like? Big/rich, or more bright and higher in acidity? I normally love Rhône whites.

@Shay A, not sure if you can buy it direct absent being a club member, but the ugni blanc usually sells out from the winery pretty quickly. He also makes a terrific grenache blanc and picpoul blanc. All three are more Alsacian in style rather than Rhone.

The Sacred Burro Willow Creek District Carignan 2018

First time having this one, I’d buy it again.
Vinous 94

Winemaker Anthony Yount produced a stellar set of wines in 2018, all of which exhibit the vibrant fruit character that marks the vintage. Once again, I was impressed by the all-Carignan Sacred Burro bottling, which shows the potential of this still-obscure variety in Paso Robles, both as a blending grape and for a stand-alone varietal bottling. While more and more wineries have begun to include it in their plantings and the resulting wines, nobody yet is doing it as consistently well as Denner.

The Royal Nonesuch Farm

York Mountain Clairette Blanche 2019

From Anthony Yount (also makes Kinero in addition to his main gig at Denner), this is a terrific, lighter style of clairette blanche. Has kind of a tight temperature window where it really signs - too warm and you lose the acidity, too cold and you lose the aromatics - but in its sweet spot just below 50 F it’s perfect. Will be interesting to see if it puts on a little weight with another year or two in bottle (which could be cool). — 5 years ago

I have never had Angelus so I don’t know if this is “the angelus of Paso Robles” but it is damn fine! The merlot and cab franc balance out each other nicely for a silky, structured wine that is easy just to sip or can be pontificated about! — 5 years ago
