Champ-Chenin Chinon Chenin Blanc 1993

Color : White
Wine estate : Domaine Olga Raffault
Designation : Chinon
Name : Champ-Chenin
Country : France
Vivino : 4.5/5
Note : Tasted a few months ago, it's amazing how this beauty can grow old in the cellar. A cloudy robe with an intense nose of flint, toast as well as almond. On the palate, a freshness that has survived through the years, floral flavors and superb length.

Terra Rosea Cairanne Red Rhone Blend

Coteaux Des Travers Terra Rosea
A bio-dynamically produced blend from Cairanne wine maker Robert Charavin.
I didn't have high expectations but this surprised me right away. Very approachable immediately upon opening, black raspberry, dried herbs, roasted cocoa. The texture is soft- hinting at clay soil - medium tannins, fine in texture. All of the olfactory senses carry over to the taste buds making it enjoyably drinkable. It's not a wine that's layered with complexity, instead it's a wine that is a solidly enjoyable experience to a broad audience and can be served on its own or paired with a variety of simple foods - this should be a go to for roasted chicken.

Mayacamas Vineyards

Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Delectable Wine
10

The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the truly exceptional wines of the vintage. As I worked through this series of retrospective tastings, I had hoped to find at least one wine like this. A truly epic 2011. When I tasted the Mayacamas Cabernet, I knew I had found it. Deep, potent and massively constituted, the 2011 possesses tremendous richness and pure power, all within the classical framework that is such a Mayacamas signature. Dark fruit, lavender crushed rocks, menthol and sage build as this explosive Cabernet shows off its pedigree. The 2011 is the last vintage Bob Travers made at Mayacamas (although it was blended and bottled by the current team). It is very clearly one of the wines of this challenging and misunderstood vintage, as well as a fitting testament to his legacy. Harvest stretched into late October and early November. Mayacamas Vineyards

Mt. Veeder Pinot Noir 2006

This bottle was generously provided by a friend, direct from his cellar. Let me start by stating that this wine made an impression. For one, I had never even seen a bottle of Mayacamas Pinot Noir (I think they only made a couple hundred cases a year). Second, at nearly 16 years old, I knew this was made by Bob Travers which meant we were probably in for a unique experience. I was not wrong. Popped and poured; no formal notes due to the setting. The wine poured a deep ruby with just a little bit of fine sediment which turned out to be the only thing that indicated any age on this bottle. Frankly, this came across…like it was a baby. Incredibly primary notes of tart red fruits, rhubarb, green herbs, olive, and dry earth. The other interesting characteristic was that it seemed to have a heavy influence of American oak. I seem to recall Bob Travers had some unusual cellar practices…but I don’t recall him using very much new oak…if at all. Anyway, this was a really unique wine and unlike any other Pinot Noir from Napa that I have ever had. The stated 15% alcohol seems almost laughable. If that’s true, then it’s remarkably controlled. If this bottle is a true indication of evolution, then expect a long life ahead. Drink now with a decant or enjoy through 2031. — 4 years ago

Sky Vineyards

Estate Bottled Mt. Veeder Zinfandel

Gorgeous, medium-bodied Zinfandel from some of the most remote vineyards in all of Napa, gown organically on Mt. Veeder’s volcanic soils, at 2,100 ft. altitude, and made by California cult producer Lore Olds - Bob Travers’ assistant winemaker at Mayacamas back in the 1970s. Earthy, mineral and balanced. Blackberry, peppery smokiness, hints of nail polish or marker — 6 years ago
