I’ve enjoyed this wine a few times. Great winemaker.

Evangelho Vineyard Mourvedre 2017

The @Hardy Wallace signature funk-and-red-fruit in effect here. Reminds me a bit of Metras with its light and almost carbonic nose on opening, but it gathers weight with time. There is a small bit of VA clearly evident here but it blows off quickly. With a little air, this is more and more reminiscent of Cru Beaujolais crossed with Bandol. If 2017 was a tough year for D&R, you can’t tell by this intriguing and protean Evangelho. — a year ago

Julien Fayard, winemaker for Covert Estate, Azur, Taplin Cellars, Matthew Wallace and more, stopped by Fort Worth tonight to showcase a few different wines. A pleasure to meet and share wines with!

This was almost a clone of the Terra 9, but every facet was just turned up a notch. The mid-palate showed more complexity of fruits and spice. Huge mix of fresh raspberries, blackberries, cassis and nutmeg. Needs a 2+hr decant.

Without a doubt a nod to Julien’s upbringing. Very Provençal with little acid, salmon colored in the glass. Strawberry, peach and stone driven on the palate.

Familiar Blanc California White Blend 2016

Hardy Wallace makes Familiar Blanc from a mixed bag of his best whites. So much I love. Stripped and oxidized just right - light brass. Salty tangerine butterscotch, bruised apple, apricot. — 4 months ago

Antle Vineyard Mourvedre 2013

In 2029+ we will look back on @Hardy Wallace as a pioneer in California natty. This represents that transition. Very Arnot-Roberts-y, this fuses early-century California while showing what’s possible. Incubating the model. — 7 months ago

This was fun to taste alongside the Matthew Wallace. Two very different AVAs (this being Coombsville, MW being Stag’s Leap). Both had similarities in dark fruit being the most dominant, but this had much more “cool” fruit notes as well as stone and graphite. This wine showed an immense amount of freshly squeezed blackberries on the mid-palate with cedar and mint. At 5-years old, it still shows as a baby with the tannic finish. Long decant necessary.

I was able to visit this property back in ‘16 and the caves and tasting room and drop dead gorgeous...some of the most beautiful I’ve come across. Entire line-up is very solid.

@Eric Shanks : The Covert line-up is strong from top to bottom, especially if you enjoy Coombsville cabs (which I think you do), but they are also not cheap. This one is $150. Their Sage Hill (Pritchard Hill) Cab is insanely good, but I think it creeps around $200...ouch. If you enjoy Julien’s wines (he also makes Purlieu and Le Pich, but I’ve had neither), then you will really enjoy these.

@Greg Ballington : I remember you posting about Scalon. Definitely a wine I’d like to try, including his Purlieu wines!

Served blind to a few of us by @Weston Eidson . My initial, and final call, of this was ‘14-‘15 Napa Cab. Honestly, hard to put it anywhere else. A more ripe and rich version with an overwhelming amount of baking spices, bruised dark fruits and fig on the nose. Low acidity and an overall “soft” profile...tannic, but not overly so. Nutmeg, cocoa shavings, baked mixed berry pie and just a hint of dust/chalkiness to it. Super approachable now. Julien Fayard makes wonderful wines and I think this, along with his Matthew Wallace wines, are the most enjoyable young. — 5 months ago

Served blind as well, this one was in the Napa cab wheelhouse from start to finish. My guess was around 2012-13 St Helena Cab, as it already seems to be gaining quite a bit of complexity. Nose of sweet blackberry and spice. Entry is full-bodied blackberry, graphite, middle starting to gain some pepper. Still fairly tannic finish but softer than I imagined. Nice wine @Weston Eidson

Sow's ear -> silk purse. Lemons -> lemonade. Ashes -> Phoenix. Or something like that. Whatever the crappy input was, the output is juicy glou-glou American vin du soif by way of Beaujolais with a sidecar of natty Southwest France. I want this all the time. (Though not at the expense of declassing all the single vineyard fruit that's in here.) Even better when you're glamping in Baja. @Hardy Wallace — 2 years ago

Love the description almost as much as I love the wines these guys put out. Saw where the next unfamiliar was bottled yesterday and has some petit sirah and zin thrown into the mix. Should be a really fun one. Cheers!

I enjoyed tasting this and the Taplin Reserve side by side. Both wines are more red and black fruit driven. The Terra 9 wins the QPR award. Lots of cherries, black cherry, dark chocolate, blackberries and mocha. This could be pop and pour, but is best with 30mins-1hr of air.
