Domaine Bernard Gripa

Le Berceau Saint-Joseph Syrah 2015

Nose: inky dark blackberries.

Palate: deep dense blackberries. Balanced but very dense. Almost monolithic.

Most people will like this more than I do.

As this opens a bit more elegant.

Young but will so great from this new rare Gripa St. Joseph Cuvee. More finesse driven than the Berceau and sits between that and the regular St. Joseph. Gorgeous nose of smoked meat, mint, hint of oak, big red berry fruit, floral and superb granite. What one wants. I love it. As it aerates a perfume develops. Palate is deep, structured, fresh and ripe. So clean. Juicy and substantial tannins but elegant as well. Long finish with superb clarity and sap. Really well made and also young. But just a terrific debut. — 4 years ago

I adore 2021. Insane wine. Nose is feral, herbal and gamey and so expressive for a young Berceau. Red fruits galore with unreal clarity and depth. Granite aromas but expressed in a floral way as they are so expressive. Quite layered and so elite. A knockout nose and that’s just as the bottle is opened. Maybe 3-5% black fruits but barely black. Wow what a palate. Rich yet focused and with maybe 75% red and 25% black fruits but beguiling freshness and velvety, high quality tannins. Wow the nose after a fresh pour is 9.8. Palate has substantial grip, tannins and structure and is imposing but not like a warmer vintage expression of Le Berceau. It’s got velvety, molten tannins that are perfectly ripe and the fruit is mid season red berries and such incredibly realized red fruits with just insane clarity. Infused with herbs and crushed granite and the finish goes on forever. But needs air and my score will go higher.

Nose is now smokey and meaty. Wild flowers and mint. So complex and intense. Palate is so fresh and energetic with red cherry and classic flavors and loads of mineral intensity. Really elegant and stunning texture. So much energy. Wow. 9.5 to 9.6.

Nose is a bit quiet. Some caramel, tropical and yellow fruits but seems backwards and tightly coiled. Lovely elegant minerals. Very pretty and restrained. Love the strong granite component and elegant and subtle tropicality. Palate is just awesome. Rich, elegant, textured, opulent and shockingly pure. Amazing finesse. This is a very elite St. Joseph Blanc. Terrific gras, so much energy and freshness for days. This is as good as St. Joseph Blanc can get outside of Gripa Le Berceau Blanc. Wonderful. Excited to see it develop. — 2 years ago
