William Shiraz 2011

Dense Crimson in colour. The nose and palate on this full bodied red are more reminiscent of a South Australian Red than the medium bodied savoury style typical of the Hunter Valley. Just the faintest hint of HV sweat and earth. This showed rich ripe black currant with smooth tannins. It’s a pity there was a time when HV wines tried to mimic the SA styles which were more popular. This is an example of that. Quite a good wine but not true to its origins. Thankfully the main HV wineries have returned to their original style - think Mount Pleasant Maurice O’Shea, Brokenwood Graveyard and Tyrells Individual Paddocks. — 7 days ago

Grand Rutherglen Topaque Tokay

See recent notes for the Stanton and Killeen Grand Muscat. This is the Topaque (cannot call it Tokay any more) made from the Muscadelle grape. Like the Grand Muscat the average blended age is 15 to 20 years. Very similar in flavour profile with the Muscat, the latter probably a bit sweeter with more molasses notes. This Topaque is a tiny bit more bitter with caramel, toffee and a lot of liquid raisin character. Thoroughly delicious. These old Rutherglen fortifieds are one of Australia’s gifts to the vinous world. — 6 days ago

These old Vintage Ports from the likes of Lindemans live forever. Rancio spirity aromas with dried fruit raisin notes. A thick mouthfeel - goes to all corners - of profound intensity. Notes of cough medicine which is not unusual. Will still be going strong in a decade or two. — 24 days ago

Margaret Barossa Sémillon 2005

See previous notes - this wonderful old Semillon keeps getting better and better. Mid Lemon in colour. Aromas of Lanolin, beeswax, wet hay, lemongrass and toast. 0n the palate a soapy texture amongst the citrus and honey notes with refreshing bright acidity. Tastes much younger than 15 years and will probably still be giving pleasure on its 20th birthday but sadly for me this is my last bottle. Totally unoaked demonstrating how good Semillon puts on weight with age and doesn’t need oak unless you want to drink it young which misses the point as Murray Tyrell used to often say. A real treat to drink this wine - the following day the citrus was riper with notes of mandarin. Stunning. — 6 days ago

Grange South Australia Shiraz 1999

Topping the night off with the pinnacle. A Grange from 1999, made during an era that it was still produced in a regular bottle and a reasonable price. It was a mature version of the Saint Henry we had earlier that evening. Extreme dense in flavor, powerful and strong oak vanilla notes. Dark fruit soaked in cigar box and oh so smooth. 21 years old. Don’t take too much time drinking it and don’t decant it. It peaks in about 30-60 minutes. — 16 days ago

Only brief notes. A combination of 4 pretty good vintages - 2012 (11%); 2013 (3%); 2014 (39%) and 2015 (47%). Only 4955 bottles filled. A menthol and sandlewood note with a faint H2S note which blew off. Trademark silky tannins and great length - the product of those old vines in the Hoffmann Dallwitz vineyard. — 5 hours ago

Grand Rutherglen Muscat

This Grand Muscat is a step up from the Classic 12 year old I tasted 95 weeks ago. Liquid raisins, milk chocolate and toffee with incredible intensity. These are great to sip after dinner in winter but not as appealing as the weather warms up unless served with a slight chill. I hope the coming Summer is not as destructive as last Summer. — 9 days ago

Black Label Sémillon 1979

The label is barely there, but i bought in the James Halliday's collection auction as a Wood Matured Black label 1979.
At this stage I opened a few of these old semillon and I am honestly loving them even though i realise that not everyone would.
Once they get to room temperature the magic happens.
This is complex and fairly fresh, not gone at all.
I smell almond, bruised apples, nutmeg, ginger, turmeric, lanolin, coriander. Autumn forest floor and boiled chestnuts. Nougat and marzipan. Peppermint.
It's very long. It's an experience. It talks its own language. I don't think there is anything like it anywhere else. 41yo, nearly my age, but much more interesting than me.
