A Sour Beer Co.

BFM (Brasserie des Franches-Montagnes)

Abbaye de Saint Bon Chien 2019

BFM = Brasserie Franches Montagne. This is the Flanders Red Ale. A sour ale.

Possibly the best beer I have ever had?
The nose is dried red apple + dried guava +
Tart fruit on the tongue with a finish of sweet malt and tart cherry juice.
A wonderful acid finish that to me is reminiscent of what you might find in a

La Belle Rêveuse Alamo Creek Vineyard Syrah 2018

So good. This taste like a quality Saint Joseph combined with a top notch sour beer. Snappy red and blue fruit, purple flowers, soil, cured meat, and botanicals. Crisp acidity, and easy but noticeable tannins. A cloudy ruby red/magenta in the glass. Delightfully funky and wild. — 6 years ago

Ruination Double IPA

Surprisingly, I kinda liked this despite my aversion to overly-hopped beers. The nose is a straight up hop-bomb - floral, citrusy, piney. The palate's also full-on, with heaps of hoppy bitterness, but balanced by malty sweetness and tropical fruit notes (passionfruit and mango for me). Finishes crisp and earthy. Not bad, but not my kind of beer (not an IPA fan basically). — 7 years ago

Crooked Stave

Origins Burgundy Sour Ale

On our sofa for Tanglewood this evening with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Our guest conductor Juanjo Mena is leading BRITTEN (Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes), MOZART (Piano Concerto No. 9 in E-flat) with the talented Garrick Ohlsson on piano and then concluding with BRAHMS (Symphony No. 3).

We're experiencing intense thunderstorms coming through the area tonight and generally the BSO staff prevents people from gathering on the Lawn ever since a patron was struck by lightning in 2008... So for safety, we're at home enjoying beer tonight! Thank goodness for radio simulcasts!

Color is red-purple-brown, still translucent but dark. Mostly a still beer, no notable bubbles at all. Sour/cherry/oak aspects on the nose. Palate is mild-sour, which is good if you're new at these styles of beer, it's more welcoming. Palate is distinctly tart cherry, with a lingering of oak in the finish. Nice accomplishment by the brewmaster in blending of barrel-aged stocks, smooth and enjoyable!

Green Flash Brewing Co.

Double Stout Black Ale

Produced a full head of cappuccino brown, that left a plethora of primitive dinosaur hieroglyphs. Completely opaque and dark as strong coffee. Turkish coffee impression similarly informs the aromas, with a raspberry-dark chocolate streak, a tiny dust of licorice, and some burnt caramel. Mouthfeel is stout perfection, bordering on whole milk with chocolate syrup. Espresso, gingerbread, burnt wheat, bitter, baker’s chocolate, allspice, dried cassis, wormwood, and burnt lavender. #doublestout #stout #beer #beerbeerbeer #greenflash #abv #stoutout #beeroclock #beerculture #beerdrinkers #stoutitallout #? — 9 years ago

Not only is this a weekend to remember those who have lost their lives for us, but it’s a sad weekend for me. I lost a longtime friend to cancer yesterday. We went to high school together in Iceland and we both served in the Navy. Normally this would be our weekend to get together and hang out at the pool, drinking beer and listening to 80’s music. RIP Faye I’ll miss you my friend — 4 years ago

Brasserie Dupont

Saison Dupont

There's a great video on YT on what a Saison is. In short, it's a farmhouse ale (pale or sometimes red) that was historically served to farm workers as a clean source of hydration. Without any distinctive characters and lower in alcohol then, the "Saison" only really gained it's signature when the house in question came into the equation. Also, based on my research, the checkered "Vielle Provision" yellow labels are the export labels.

As it was here, the Dupont Brewery's Saison is generally cloudy, very carbonated via bottle conditioning, zesty and spicy, bitter with a hint of sour, and a dry hoppy finish. For me, this is truly "The beer for all seasons" - the flavours are just so versatile. Perfect for a warm summer afternoon in the park, yet complex enough to pair with a 3-star dish.

Hopsecutioner India Pale Ale

Almost exclusively, sweet citrus notes of grapefruit, Meyer lemon and key lime but malty too with drops of caramel and honey, and dinner rolls with truffle honey and marmalade. Malt continues on the palate, with less sweetness overall, but exhibiting tangerine, blood orange and grilled lemon instead. Sensory overload in a good way!! — 7 years ago

On the nose, dark sour cherries, dates, burnt figs, grilled meats, burnt ambers, liquid smoke & dark dry florals. The core color is dark with garnet edges. The palate is; slightly sour but mostly sweet dark cherries, stewed plum, cooked strawberries, rhubarb, dates, figs, tomatoes, smoke, grilled meats, brewed coffee, light tarry notes, dry crushed rock powder, volcanic minerals, dark rich earth, dusty tannins, dry dark florals, soft chewy leather, nice round acidity with a decent, soft, elegant finish...50-50 fruit & earth. This is the largest co-op producer in Europe with 50 members. They collectively have 250 acres; which is about 1/6 of the total under vine. Photos of; the town of Barbaresco (their tasting room near the tower), Produttori cellar and their tasting bar. No appointment necessary. Close to Gaja and the town has one of the best one star Michelin lunches as well as the best service we've experienced. Just right of Gaja. Good with our Veal Bolognese. — 9 years ago

Cantillon Brewery

Bruocsella 1900 Grand Cru Organic Lambic Ale 2021

Vintage Lambic “which has matured for three years in oakwood barrels and has been selected for its exceptional colour, taste and flavour.”
“Powerful yet elegant, Bruocsella can be considered the missing link between the worlds of wine and beer. Since there is no secondary fermentation in the bottle Bruocsella is a flat, non-sparkling beer.”
“This aristocratic beer is to our national beer patrimony what Mouton-Rotschild, Petrus or Romanée-Conti are to the wines.”

Matthiasson Vineyard Ribolla Gialla 2018

Interesting & provocative. Tasted more like a beer than a wine because of hoppy aroma & acidic/sour flavor. Tropical & juicy citrus notes. Nice & balanced entrance & mid-palate but the finish isn’t pleasant with a bitter funky after taste. — 6 years ago

A beautiful unfiltered sake with banana, white peaches and green apple on the nose with sour papaya, pineapple, fresh coconut and lemon zest. This sake starts out a little tart on the palate and smooths out in 4 to 5 seconds and leaves a luscious creaminess on the palate that goes well with medium fatty fish. This is a medium bodied sake to pair with hirame or sake. — 7 years ago
