Vieillisement Prolongé (V.P) Extra Brut Champagne

Shay A

Disgorged 2018 after 84 months on the lees.

This is Egly-Ouriet’s late disgorged offering, and it’s another scintillating champagne that seals my opinion that they are my favorite producer across all offerings. The texture, complexity and character of these champagnes check off every box for me. I’m always chasing Jacques Selosse, and while that’s a goal that will never be achieved (because Selosse champagnes have no equal), this is the closest I’ve come to in regards to style and complexity. Surprisingly, this only has one extra year on the lees compared to their Les Crayeres offering (my favorite), and it’s much more vinous. The aromatics here are ripe, rich and slightly oxidized golden delicious apple, pear, honeyed apricot, orange blossom, and almond croissant. Very fine mousse, to where this almost goes more old white burgundy in style, but still retaining sharp acidity. The palate shows so many floral (honeysuckle) notes alongside more pear and apricot, with a kiss of red fruits and chamomile. Extremely lengthy finish that trends toward caramel but continues to a more tart side instead of sweet. I need to get my hands on an older bottle.

@Shay A Totally agree re Egly. The Blanc de Noirs (100% Pinot Noir) is my favourite.

Clear and bright garnet. Nose scared me at first being nothing but dirt. After opening up it gives black cherry, black cranberry, and forest floor (a.k.a., dirt). Medium light on the palate which echoes the nose. Medium plus acidity and sneaky medium tannins. A firm Burgundy-style Pinot Noir that’s a great match for high-end Old World fare or New World salmon, duck, or pork dishes. NV like so much from Champagne, so drink it (up to a year from) when you buy it. — 18 days ago

Grand Cellier d'Or 1er Cru Brut Champagne Pinot Noir Chardonnay 2002

On a a par with 02 Couer de Cuvée. Not as rich but more spine. A tart apple dominant note. I have never seen that this strong in a Champagne this old. — 14 days ago

Green Apple, lots of citrus acidity, fresh zesty fruits and more minerals than the Caillez Lemaire Eclats tasted alongside. Some rubber band and seashells. Fresher, but a touch unresolved by comparison. On the whole a real favorite and a great value. — 6 days ago

2012 base vintage. The richness of Krug with more normal acidity. I am told there will be 2012 vintage Krug. Seems strange — 5 days ago

Terroirs d'Ecueil 1er Cru Champagne Blend

85/15 PN/Ch with 2016 vintage and 56% reserve wines, disgorged Nov 2019.
Fruitforward on the nose with fresh raspberries & red currant, juicy bright lemons, maybe a touch of basil + only a bit of brioche / lemon tart.
Fresh & bone-dry on the palate with tiny, persistent bubbles and a nice rich mouthfeel. Focused & precise with good depth & long finish.
This is a lovely, fruity yet savoury wine. I really like it.
