Les Clos De L'orme Chambolle-Musigny Pinot Noir 2017

Another great 2017…really punches above village level. Certainly ripe and a bit plump, but very fresh with no hint of overextraction. There is noticeable new oak - sweet and spicy - but the quality is clearly excellent, and it integrates well after a couple hours of air. — 9 days ago

Sainte-Épine Saint-Joseph Syrah 2016

This needed air to really reveal itself. I should have decanted. I waited a day to try again and was rewarded. Complex and beautiful. Cured meats, black fruit, spice, licorice, limestone, plus a finish that just lingers. I am guessing this will improve with a couple more years of age. — 18 days ago

Aux Thorey Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2006

Still quite young. Took about an hour for the vineyard character to take the lead from the winemaker’s signature. Both modes delicious, but the latter is really the distinction one looks for in Burgundy. — a month ago

À la Fraîche... Chardonnay

If you sniff hard, you might find the kind of smoky tropical aromatics of wild mezcal. Flint and green banana. Then a creamy spectrum of grassy green, yellow lemon, orange guava. — 16 days ago

Saint-Joseph Marsanne Roussanne 2015

Beeswax baby on top of a soil and petrol nose.
Second btl. This one travelled after being decanted. Showed very well, enjoyed with cheeses and esp. by a former restaurant wine buyer.

Suck a Rock Red Rhône Blend 2018

Having made my way through the line of Bocks, Suck a Rock is probably my favorite - it’s uncomplicated and balanced - dark berries and minerals.

Raspberry, blackberry, violets, chalk dust.

Clean and focused.

Sylvain Gauthier Cuvée Aubert St. Joseph Syrah 2017

Painfully young, but that old vine syrah and granite density make it hard to resist. Dark, angry, pure granitic bite on the back half, needs some time, but the ripeness and warming fruit is coaxed out with air. I see a lot of potential here. — a month ago
