South Australia Cabernet Sauvignon

Unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2008

Typical Coonawarra mint - as also cassis, hints of chocolate and blackberry. Sweet on the palate, the oak is dominated by the excellent fruit - great this way rather than the other way round. Medium plus intensity with supple tannins. An excellent Coonawarra Cabernet. Cabernet Sauvignon 60%; Merlot 31%; 9% Shiraz. First of 6. HH’s drinking window through to 2040. Bottled without filtration. — 2 days ago

Juniper Estate

Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

See previous notes from November 2020. Herbaceous is the word together with plum and blackberry - some earthiness with a note of mushroom. In summary - Herbal, Mineral, Bay leaf. Not the complete package like it’s more illustrious Wilyabrup neighbours like Woodlands, Moss Wood, Vasse Felix, Cullen etc but also half the price so good QPR. — 14 days ago

Clarendon Hills

Brookman Clarendon Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Found this in my local specialty shop for $30 and couldn’t believe that an aged Clarendon Hills would be so cheap. It did not disappoint! Probably a little jammier than expected but the layers of spice and fruit were so delicious. Importantly, Not overly tannic and well balanced. A very enjoyable wine! — 17 days ago

A. P. Birks

Wendouree Cabernet Malbec 2018

Amazingly found this bottle at rustic pizza, Clare Valley at a $130. Thought this might be our only chance to drink a Wendouree so grabbed it. Beautifully fresh fruited, lovely balance, crisp acidity, medium bodied. Black/red fruited with violet highlights, spice, earth, eucalypt, silky dry tannin. The longer we sat with it the leather and tannin became quite firm, perhaps overwhelming some of the earlier fruit flavours. Drunk too young but still memorable. — 6 days ago

Vasse Felix

Tom Cullity Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec 2015

Delectable Wine

Inky ruby. A hugely perfumed bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, incense, vanilla, exotic spices and candied flowers, and a smoky oak nuance builds slowly in the glass. Sappy and penetrating on the palate, offering wonderfully concentrated yet lively cherry liqueur, black currant, fruitcake, lavender pastille and mocha flavors that are accented by cracked pepper and mineral flourishes. Shows outstanding energy and smoky persistence on the dark-fruit- and floral-dominated finish, which features building spiciness and youthfully gripping tannins. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, July 2021)

Bin 389 South Australia Cabernet Shiraz 2009

At first, minerals and crushed granite on the nose.  Sweet, simple fruit and a little bit syrupy.

With about 6 hours of air it reveals tobacco, stewed figs, jammy red fruit, mint and some beef jerky, filling out to be very expressive. A little too jammy but delivers a lot of pleasure.

Howard Park

Miamup Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Delectable Wine

Displaying spice-accented cherry, redcurrant and floral qualities, with a hint of tobacco, this is a classic expression of elegant Margaret River Cabernet. Seamless and lively on the sharply defined palate, it fleshes out through a long finish that's framed by polished, even tannins. $23.00 (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, July 2021) — 12 days ago

Cape Mentelle

Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Delectable Wine

Shimmering ruby. Smoke- and mineral-accented cherry and cassis scents are complemented by cigar box, cured tobacco and rose nuances. Silky and concentrated on the palate, offering penetrating dark berry and bitter cherry flavors supported by a spine of juicy acidity. Distinctly energetic in style, finishing with sharp clarity and slowly building, fine-grained tannins. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, July 2021)
