South Australia Cabernet Sauvignon

Two Left Feet Shiraz Blend 2020

Blend of 69% Shiraz, 16% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from McLaren Vale, deep Ruby color with aromas of berry fruits and sweet spice. On the palate flavors of blackberry and cherry with notes of vanilla, spice, licorice and tobacco. Fine tannins, medium+ finish ending with fruit, sweet spice and earthy notes. — 14 days ago

Grange Bin 95 Shiraz 1991

95% Shiraz, 5% Cabernet. Considered to be one of the top 5 Granges in the 50 years between 1951 and 2001. I’ve always rated the 91 slightly higher than the 1990 which put Grange on the map in the USA when Wine Spectator made it their Wine of the Year and front page of their magazine. Nicely mature at 32 years with at least another decade or two in front of it. Black fruits of berry and cherry with mocha and dark chocolate. An absolutely smashing opulent wine which is made to go with Roast Lamb. Next one in 5 to 10 years. — a month ago

Also drinking a wine like this is cause for celebration at the likely lifting of punitive tariffs on Australian wine imposed by China a few years ago.

Polish Hill Clare Valley Riesling 2000

Lyle Fass

Great petrol nose. Honeyed. Apricots. Mineral and subtle. Really nice. Palate is elegant and complex with great acidity and tension. Very long and juicy. Excellent purity and freshness. A great showing. — 18 days ago

19 Crimes

The Uprising Shiraz Blend 2011

Another pleasant wine from 19 Crimes. $6 from the Treasury employee store. What a bargain for a bottle that doesn’t break the bank and is palatable. — 8 days ago

Torbreck Vintners

The Struie Barossa Valley Shiraz 2021

Concentrated extract. Nearly pitch black in the glass. Takes an hour to come to complete expression with layers of dark red fruit of cherry and plum soaked in spice. Remained very centered on the palette and settled in a complex, layered finish. Since we have been in Australia for more than six weeks I have to use the cricket lingo: this wine was all about ‘Lane and Length’. Much, much enjoyed it. Blew my head off. — 10 days ago

Bin 28 Kalimna South Australia Shiraz 2010

Dark dark Ruby - call it black. From the ripe 2010 vintage. Black fruits, mulberry, anise, herbs - very full bodied, very Barossa and very Penfolds. At least 10 to 15 years in front of it. As HH said undoubtedly a warm climate style, and it’s so true. On the palate ripe plum, blackberry and liquorice. Oak not as prominent as in previous tastings. Next one in mid 2025. — a month ago

Leeuwin Estate

Art Series Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Tropical fruit, white grapefruit, flowers, sea spray, baking spices, Chantilly cream, green peppercorns, and hints of chalky minerals. Lengthy, smooth finish. Perhaps more aromatic with less concentrated fruit than the 2017. Australia once again showing its strength for super complex, outstanding Chardonnay without the Napa or Burgundy prices.

Worth noting critics rating this 94-98 pts. With the increased aromatics, I prefer it ever slightly to the 2017.

Blue Eyed Boy Shiraz 2020

Love these “Blue Boys.” Mollydooker (Aussie for left-hander) Wines was established in 2005 by Sarah and Sparky Marquis. Dark Ruby with dark berry fruit aromas adding sweet spice and cedar. On the palate this wine has complex flavors of blackberry and blueberry with licorice, cacao, oak and vanilla. Fine dusty tannins, peasant mouthfeel (16% Alcohol), full-bodied, long ending with a nice spicy finish. Aging well, good now, has room to run over short term. — 13 days ago

Basket Press Barossa Valley Shiraz 2020

Another amaaazing wine here in Down Under. The Basket Press only available to the ‘in’ members of Rockford winery. Rich flavors expressing from beginning to end in layers of dark, ripe fruits but firmly anchored by well rounded, soft tannins that carried the experience to a long lingering, pleasant finish. We had lunch with our friend who happened to ‘in’ 😊 with Rockford hence our opportunity to taste this wine and share it with other friends who had been admiring Rockford wines for 40 years. — 23 days ago

@Jan de Weerd are they still bottling single vineyard Shiraz in great years?
Jan de Weerd

Jan de Weerd

I am not sure Ira. I think they produce the basket press every year, selected from several barrels from different vineyards. I don’t think they are all estate vineyards either. But, again, not sure. Fantastic wine however. They are also making some fun wines using Alicante Bouchet, like a red ‘white’ wine and then use the pressed skins to coferment with a Grenache/Mourvèdre blend to give it a nice spicy tanniny backbone and call it the ‘frugal farmer’ 😁
