One Point Five Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Last nights wine we opened was the 2018 Shafer One Point Five Stags Leap District Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. This vintage is a blend of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Malbec.

On the nose there is black cherry, blackberry, plum, black currant, sweet tobacco, rose petals, mint and rich earth.

On the palate are wonderful notes of black cherry, blackberry, black currant, chocolate, licorice, lavender, spice, cedar and earth.

This wine is medium to full bodied with a silky smooth mouthfeel, medium + acidity and medium + smooth round tannins that moves wonderfully into a long dark fruit earthy finish. The weekend is moving swimmingly forward with wonderful friends and loving family. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and please stay safe and healthy. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

Think salt/pepper to accentuate a great steak from the grill.

@M. Christopher Roebuck "If I’m starting with our Cabernet-based blend, I’ll put together a really good Cab blend which will end up being 60–65% of the final wine,” says Brian Carter, winemaker and managing partner, of Brian Carter Cellars. “Then I look at increasing complexity and increasing balance by adding other varieties. If I add too many other things that it no longer tastes like Cabernet, then I’ve gone too far.”
Often winemakers will start by blending in larger percentages and then move to smaller percentages, evaluating all along the way. As they get closer, they might look at tweaking just one or two percent of a wine.
“A lot of people wonder, what does two percent do?” says James Mantone, winemaker, vineyard manager and co-founder, of Syncline Winery. “Sometimes it’s radical what it does. It can change the whole sensation of a wine.”

TD-9 Napa Valley Red Blend 2017

Dark, dark purple with no hint of translucency. An eclectic nose that just leaps out of the glass. Mulberries and rhubarb. Black cherries and strawberry preserves mingle with lusty dark chocolate and dry earth.

56/23/21 Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon/Malbec primarily from wonderful Stags Leap and Yountville grapes. A proper decant is necessary because of the 15.3% alcohol. Most wines just cannot maintain their composure with that kind of heat but the Shafer does very well here, not surprisingly. Ripe tannins and nice complexity.

Savory notes take over on the palate with cloves, smoke, and stewed plums. Grilled meat, bacon fat, and blueberry cobbler. Just delicious. Leather and mint with warm spice on the long finish. A sturdy wine with years to go.

A generous soul brought this to our college reunion/ get together BBQ-never a big fan of Cali Chard flavors (guava, pineapple, etc), I was won over by its tautness, silky mouthfeel, & fruit intensity. — a month ago

Super nice. Cote rotie like. Roasted coffee, smoked meats and lots of dark fruit: supple, clean and decadent Note: if you’re not on the ‘Pisoni’ mailing list you’re missing out. Although you may not get ‘Pisoni’ Pisoni estate Pinot off the bat, you should load up on Lucia ‘slh’ Pinot which is 60% pisoni estate fruit and this Syrah which, along with Jeff Pisoni’s wife’s cattelaya label is maybe the best Syrah in America. Or among a select handful. It’s half as expensive as saxum, sqn and shafer but in my opinion twice as good. Boom @Jeff Pisoni — 4 months ago
