Puisseguin St. Émilion, Libournais

Château Cheval Blanc

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2001

So a few years ago I started my Merlot Thursday series, where I drink Merlot every Thursday. This is actually the wine that started it all. After watching the movie sideways a few times, I decided to try to get Merlot back in the game.

This wine was on my wishlist for a long long time, and I'm glad I am able to try it, finally.

Medium plus in body with medium acidity.

Showing a beautiful nose with great complexity,

Dry on the palate and elegant.

Showing red and black fruits with earth, wood, spices, peppercorn, coffee, graphites, vegetables and herbs.

Long finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a great experience. A delicious Merlot based Bordeaux blend from Saint Emilion. Not from the best vintage, but at this level of wine making, it is almost always gorgeous.

Feels young and would continue to age nicely in the next few decades.

Showing great complexity and mouthfeel. I loved the nose much better than the palate.

Robert Parker 93 points. Wine Spectator 93 points.

I had it after 6 hours of airtime. I really wanted to love it even more, but it is what it is. Got to keep it real.

A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc.

13.5% alcohol by volume.

93 points.

Château de Pressac

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend 2017

On the nose, dried flowers, pepper, mint, blackberry, cola, cedar, with a hint of black licorice and or meat. Perhaps one of the most complex bouquets I've experienced in months. The black fruit, cola, mint carry through to the plate. Nicely balanced, medium plus alcohol, medium acidity, dry, medium body. Long finish, smooth tannins. This wine is certainly a pop n pour, but can also improve a bit more with time

75%M, 24%CF & 1%CS. Extremely enticing and seductive wine. Bags of plum fruit and blackberry, oak, nutmeg and licorice. Hardly no tannins, high alcohol with 15%. Huge concentration but very polished. Rebuy. — 9 days ago

Château Bellefont-Belcier

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2017

It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday.

This is a very tasty Merlot based blend from Saint Emilion.

Full-bodied with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with nice complexity.

Showing blueberries, black plums, cooked cherries, cola, chocolates, light vanilla, oak, light vegetables, herbs and black pepper.

This 5 year old is still young and needs three to five years in the bottle to mature. Will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years.

I had it a few months ago and this time I gave it 24 hours to open up in the bottle. Much better this way.

Good by itself or with food. I enjoyed it with Camembert cheese and crackers.

A blend of 68% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc.

15% alcohol by volume.

Château Laroque

Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

97%M & 3%CF. Totally different Saint-Emilion. Very elegant and pure. Lightweight in the nose with medium bodied palate. Juicy and bright. Racy power with an enormous freshness. Crushed cassis, black fruit, cherry, dry flowers (violets) pepper, spice, mineral and some smoke. Superior balance, drinking rapidly. — 9 days ago

Château Poesia

Saint-Emilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

Delectable Wine

The 2019 Poesia has the richest and most opulent bouquet with precocious black cherry, glycerine, lavender and violet aromas, bursting from the glass and gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with plush, ripe tannins. There is a lot of puppy fat here, rounded and perhaps "sexy" compared to the 2018, mouth-filling and voluminous. This will need time. Tasted at the Poesia vertical in Saint-Émilion. (Neal Martin, Vinous, June 2022)

Clos de l'Oratoire des Papes

Comtes de Neipperg St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend

Sticking with St. Emilion for the night. This wine is quite different from the last. Deep dark stewed blue fruits and figs, pencil lead, quite extracted, nose and palate in harmony transmitting similar notes. Even the darker color forshadows the darkness to follow. This wine is oppulent, but without the big fruit forward New World bravado. It stays true to Bordeaux but pushes the limits. Medium plus alcohol and body, slightly drying tannins, long finish. I regret that I have finished my steak because this wine craves a proper food pairing. Excellent and it will only get better.

Château Laroze

Famille Meslin St. Émilion Grand Cru Merlot Blend 2014

Dark ruby colour. Dense nose: oak, blackberry/blackcurrant, cedar, very Bordeaux. Palate, supple, balanced, medium-bodied, with rounded tannins. Final average duration. Correct for its price. Classic style: the perfect Saint-Émilion à Papa. Not my favourite style but for its price, it's correct.

Robe rubis sombre.

L'Enclos St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

From team at Cheval Blanc, blend of 68% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Cabernet Franc, aged in 500 liter barrels, 50% new. Deep Ruby with aromas of dark berry fruit, floral and spice. On the palate flavors of black cherry, currant and blueberry fruit with cigar box and cinnamon spice. Lively acidity, elegant fine tannins, well balanced just starting to wake up, long finish ending with slight earthy notes, plenty of depth, will continue to develop. Nice! — 20 days ago
