Clos Mogador

Priorat Red Blend 2005

Open and lush. Almost Merlot-like. Violets and roses and plum. Not too hot. Very good. Lacks a little structure — 2 days ago

Just had a visit here. Love the ethos behind Clos Mogador and Priorat in general. Rene Barbier’s prices are quite reasonable compared to his fellow pioneers, Alvaro Palacios (L’Ermite) and Daphne Glorian (Clos Erasmus).

Terroir al Límit

Terra de Cuques Priorat Red Blend 2017

Our last lunch in Priorat at a little restaurant in Falset, and no formal notes but keen to try again. Interestingly this winery was started by Dominik Huber and the irrepressible Eben Sadie of South African Syrah fame. This was a typical rich Priorat blend of mainly Grenache with Carignan. Full bodied and savoury with black fruits and plenty of liquorice — 21 days ago

Clos Mogador

Clos Nelin Priorat White Blend 2019

At the Clos Mogador tasting at the winery yesterday. The fact that it was 3rd in the lineup after 2 full bodied reds was no accident This full bodied delicious white more than held its own. A golden yellow in colour - fermented on skins in a combination of vessels including clay amphora. Could be drunk now or last for 20 years. Rene Barbier recently opened a 2000 for the staff and it was stunning Josep said. Notes of dried peaches and tangerine peel. Very mineral. Dense on the palate with great weight. 85% Grenache Blanc with 15% many other varieties. — 22 days ago

Clos Mogador

Gratallops Priorat Red Blend 2019

At the Clos Mogador tasting at the winery yesterday. This is the flagship - a blend of 45% Garnatxa, 29% Carinyena, 16% Syrah, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Red and blue fruits, also red and blue florals. Full bodied and again 15% ABV. Persistent tannins. The more I drink Priorat the more it reminds me of CdP with influences of garrigue ie lavender, thyme, rosemary etc which grow in isolated patches amongst the vineyards when we drove around. Our host, Josip, said he likes to drink this Cuvée at 8 to 15 years but he went on to say that Rene Barbier’s father liked to drink at 20+ years as the wine becomes more silky and develops more liquorice notes. I bought a bottle of the 2004 from their cellar to take home. — 22 days ago

Petit Pissarres Produccio Limitada Priorat Grenache Samsó 2018

ESF
8.9

PnP came right out of gate oozing stewed black cherries soaked in herb & licorice - distinct vein of minerality. Nice weight & polish on mid-palate, had a certain elegance that belied modest price point. Hint of astringency on finish, this needs time but heck of a QPR and nice entry level Priorat — 17 days ago

La Vinya del Vuit

Rene & Co 2015

Delectable this is a 100% Carignan made by Clos Mogador. This is actually the back label but the front label makes the wine even less recognisable. At Clos Mogador for a structured tasting - this is the first of 4 wines. Aromatic red and blue fruits - cedar and graphite. A big full bodied wine at 15% ABV - ample earthy tannins but enjoyable to drink now. The acidic soil ( from limestone) - fennel and liquorice notes. My notes had delicious at the end. Carignan needs plenty of sunshine to ripen effectively as it does in Sardinia. — 22 days ago

@Ray Vanderhoff @Peter van den Besselaar Josep from Clos Mogador got back to me and Delectable pretty much got it right. He said “La Vinya del Vuit” 2018. Also known as V8.
