Château La Mission Haut-Brion

Graves Red Bordeaux Blend 1966

Another great btl of this wine showing the classic La Mission nose. A wine that I have had the pleasure of drinking more than 7 cases over the last 15 yrs. The wine has barely budged & has been fully mature & holding at its prime since I opened my 1st btl. Showing red & black fruits, cedar, leather, tar, smoke, licorice, balsamic & graphite are just some of the notes. A wine that you will still taste & think of after you finish the btl. — 6 days ago

Lovely bottle. Cassis, nice tart balance. Slightly corked, sadly. — 8 days ago

West Hill

Knights Valley Red Blend 2017

Dark purple. Plum and cassis cobbler on the nose. Full-bodied palate yields plum, cassis, and blackberry, with a hint of an almost Bordelaise graphite overlay. Medium, velvety tannins and medium acidity also lend a slightly Old World structure. In fact, let's call it a New World blend for the Old World drinker. Like mid-range Margaux but more fruity. Drink now through 2027 (if properly kept).

Stony Hill

SHV Napa Valley Chardonnay

This is a note for Stony Hill Chardonnay, Spring Mountain District, vintage 2019. The last vintage without malo. Yellow apple, creamy yogurt, smoke and vanilla pods. Slightly brioche. Med-/med acidity. Creamy texture and mouthfeel. Aged 80 years' old foudres. The new winemaker started experimenting with malo, we'll see how it will turn out. We had a long walk around the vineyards looking at all the Chardonnay vines up on the hill together with the Malbec vines up there. Closer to the estate level are singled staked Riesling vines due to vine age - these are the oldest Riesling vines in the valley. Cab Franc are planted in the center area and at the front are some Gamay. Mostly on VSP some on Lyre because of western exposure. Cab Sauv were first planted in 2005. 2010 was the first Cab vintage. They had let quite a large area fallow for ~15 years, and just recently started some new plantings. Exciting stuff. — 6 days ago

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

ESF
9.1

Showed much better than previous note: inky, generous blackberry, mocha, tobacco leaf, black cherry, cassis on nose, with herbs & pepper accents - impressive complexity on the aromatics for sure… big fat mid-palate in need of sturdier tannins. Kinda fell over all the place, but in a delicious decadent way. — 9 days ago

Home Hill

Kelly's Reserve Tasmania Pinot Noir 2014

Aromatic notes of rose and violet. Great depth of delicious flavour on the medium bodied palate. Red fruits - savoury and rich. See previous note for the 2014 - always excellent but 8 years of cellaring has enhanced this wine. To have won the Jimmy Watson Trophy for the Best One Year Old Dry Red at Royal Melbourne and still starring now at 8 years of age shows this is a wine for all seasons and all years. Should be a regular purchase. A Winner. — 5 days ago

Colgin

Tychson Hill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

It’s been a long day…couple of days actually. I’ve been lucky to get some buffalo loin and this beautiful wine from Colgin to pair. Deep dark fruits, dark chocolate and espresso. The winemaker describes the 2017 vintage as having a sense of clarity and purity, something we could all use a little more of these days. — 17 days ago

Diamond Creek Vineyards

Volcanic Hill Cabernet Sauvignon 1991

Dark brooding color, opaque with lighter rims. Tight nose, hard to get a read. Notes of red fruit and raspberries, kirsch, cola and some ash comes on later. Nicely made juice, it’s well balanced. While it opened up some over the night, it was tough to get a read on this. I could only come up with mid 90s Napa Cab. Still, this is a wine lover’s wine and our ribeyes went well with this and the other bottles tonight. — a month ago
