Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Apparently it’s International Cabernet Day. Or perhaps it was on Aug 30. The world can’t seem to agree on this one. Nevertheless, this is exactly the cabernet I felt like drinking tonight. Young enough to be vibrant, with just enough time in bottle to create some intrigue. It’s concentrated and luscious with a dusty cocoa thread. The nose tends towards savoury with some nutty, woody and fragrant leafy notes, while the palate offers elegant black fruits, some herbaceousness and a little menthol. Rather delightful. — 16 days ago

Clos Santa Ana

Sirios Valle de Colchagua Red Blend 2016

A fascinating new project in Chile that has been years in the making. This blend of young Carmenérè, Cabernet Franc and some Malbec comes mostly from a 1.3ha vineyard that is as wild as the day is long. In fact, the estate is known for its rescue animals which freely roam about the land. Some of the fruit is still purchased until the vineyard fully matured. The wines are spontaneously fermented and aged for 18mos in a combination of old Chilean oak foudre and amphora. The wine has no SO2 added and is bottles unfiltered. It presents a brilliant garnet color that’s slightly hazy. The nose is remarkably fresh flowers, tobacco leaf, fresh herbs, and dark berries. Some VA for sure...but that relaxes after an hour of air. On the palate, it’s bright, crunchy dark fruits with a bit of earth and finishes long with smacking acid. The wine is rustic for sure but also remarkably fresh. Definitely own for the natural wine crowd and eschews the typical New World approach towards more international styled wines. This is definitely a project to follow. — 2 months ago

Bodegas Olarra

Cerro Añon Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2010

Gorgeous Stunning aromatics on this: soaring & decadent kirsch liqueur, blueberry pie, spice cake, cedar, vanilla, pipe tobacco, coconut and so much more. Deep dark dense and oh so plush, velvety soft caressing tannins and lubricating acidity. Only very slight bricking, this has many more years ahead: straddling the line between traditional & new international style Rioja - .2 bump for $20 price tag. Buy a case of this stuff — a month ago
