Ronchi Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2016

Delectable Wine
9.5

The 2016 Barbaresco Ronchi, the estate’s top selection, marries elegance with power so well. Freshly cut flowers, mint, sweet red berries, anise and blood orange confer freshness that plays off the wine’s dense, expansive fruit. A rush of sweet raspberry, cherry and rose petal punctuates the exuberant finish. The 2016 is a fabulous wine from a property that has been on the ascent in recent years. Sainte Anne Brut Champagne Blend

On the Lawn at Tanglewood this final afternoon with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Our guest conductor Giancarlo Guerrero (Nashville Symphony director) is leading SCHOENBERG (Friede auf Erde, Opus 13 (Peace on Earth), for unaccompanied chorus) and BEETHOVEN (Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Opus 125).

The 9th by Beethoven is always bittersweet for us, as it marks the end of the official Symphony and Pops season for the BSO at their Summer home. It is a wonderful and singularly emotive moving piece, with the full force of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus at 250+ singers, conveying the message of a divine spark of joy that makes all people one.
'Freude, schöner Götterfunken!' / 'Joy, beauteous, godly spark!'

Nose of warmed pear, light toasted brioche and wet limestone.

Palate has warmed lemon curd spread on lightly toasted bread, chalky-saline mousse and honey over yellow apple. Finish is med-long, a beautiful effort.

Disgorged 7/2017, blend of '13/'14 with a 50/50 blend of Chardonnay & Pinot Noir. Noted improvement with some additional bottle age since our prior experience (same disgorgement).

On the nose, stewed, slightly sweet & sour cherries, strawberries, red licorice/cola, dry hay, soft, understated green pepper, loamy soils, limestone and bright red, fresh florals. The mouthfeel is lush, rich, round and still fresh. The tannins are soft and nearly completely resolved. It's right around it's peak 20 years down the road. Sweet & slightly sour cherries, poached strawberries, cranberry juice, strawberry licorice/cola, red fresh florals, soft, elegant limestone minerals, crushed dry rocks, dry stones, dry hay, suede style leather, round mouth watering acidity and a long elegant finish that lasts well over a minute. The owners are Giancarlo and Nuccia Glode. They purchased the winery in 1984. The Winemaker's are Alberto Montefiori & Paola Gloder. 80 acres of the estate are under vine. Of these, around 38 arces were planted in 70s and are in the process or have been replanted in order to accommodate more dense plantings. Oak use is new Slovenian oak barrels and 500 Liter French oak barrels. The two different sizes of barrels affect bouquet and tannin differently. Total production is 90-95,000 bottles or 7,700 cases. Photos of; the estate, large oak vats, tasting room and grounds. Beautiful property! — 3 years ago

@leon egozi Italy is my favorite country to visit and not just for the wine. Beautiful country, great food and of course, the wine doesn't suck either.

Nose has ripe yellow apple, lightly oxidized green apple peel, baked phyllo dough, partially aromatic white flowers and damp rocks. I always get a natural wine vibe here, without the vinegar-like profile, but it seems alive!

Palate has baked green and yellow apple pastry, crisp acidity yet dense, candle wax begins on the finish and ends with dry granite. Great balance, very lengthy finish, clean and not cumbersome, superb vintage, long life ahead. We love you Jean-Jacques.
