Poggio Antico
Riserva Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese
On the nose, stewed, slightly sweet & sour cherries, strawberries, red licorice/cola, dry hay, soft, understated green pepper, loamy soils, limestone and bright red, fresh florals. The mouthfeel is lush, rich, round and still fresh. The tannins are soft and nearly completely resolved. It's right around it's peak 20 years down the road. Sweet & slightly sour cherries, poached strawberries, cranberry juice, strawberry licorice/cola, red fresh florals, soft, elegant limestone minerals, crushed dry rocks, dry stones, dry hay, suede style leather, round mouth watering acidity and a long elegant finish that lasts well over a minute. The owners are Giancarlo and Nuccia Glode. They purchased the winery in 1984. The Winemaker's are Alberto Montefiori & Paola Gloder. 80 acres of the estate are under vine. Of these, around 38 arces were planted in 70s and are in the process or have been replanted in order to accommodate more dense plantings. Oak use is new Slovenian oak barrels and 500 Liter French oak barrels. The two different sizes of barrels affect bouquet and tannin differently. Total production is 90-95,000 bottles or 7,700 cases. Photos of; the estate, large oak vats, tasting room and grounds. Beautiful property!

For our Italian themed New Years Eve dinner. Roast Pork Loin, polenta and an absolutely outstanding Brunello. Ripe fruit, earth well balance. Great match for the food.

Jan 1st, 2018One of my favorite Brunellos. The Riserva is particularly good and the 1997 is perfect right now. Great blend of fruit and earth. Everything you could want in this varietal.
