Aromatic notes of rose and violet. Great depth of delicious flavour on the medium bodied palate. Red fruits - savoury and rich. See previous note for the 2014 - always excellent but 8 years of cellaring has enhanced this wine. To have won the Jimmy Watson Trophy for the Best One Year Old Dry Red at Royal Melbourne and still starring now at 8 years of age shows this is a wine for all seasons and all years. Should be a regular purchase. A Winner. — 2 days ago
Made from 100% Tocai Friulano from the Collio region. Pale lemon color with aromas of white fruits and floral notes. On the palate flavors of stone fruits, honeysuckle and nutty notes. Medium finish, lively acidity, ending with floral, fruits and mineral notes. — 3 days ago
After visiting here last Fall, and leaving with more wine than any other visit (mostly due to their incredible white wines), this has been a fun wine to follow. This is my second to enjoy, and I think I have one left. For a 2014, this was pretty tightly coiled.
76 cab/24 cab franc. Love those percentages, especially from To Kalon. It certainly sports the classical powerful To Kalon flair with dominant black cherry and plenty of fragrant aromatics of violets and potpourri. Even after a few hours of bottle air, this remained tannic and slightly unyielding (very uncommon for 2014 valley floor Napa). At the end of the evening, it gave way to sweet pipe tobacco, black currant, dark spiced red fruits, and savory herbs. Hard to deny the powerful black cherry core that To Kalon normally sports. I’d hold for another 5yrs or decant 3+ hrs. — 11 days ago
Nez très Syrah, olives, violettes, poivre, un peu fumé, bouche puissante mais avec une texture riche et soyeuse mais sans excès, excellent. 93-94
Very typical Syrah, pepper, violets, olives, a touch of smoke, powerful but with no excess, rich and savory, nice length, gorgeous. — 9 days ago
I love when a wine schools me. Opened my first bottle a few years back and thought, big on price and low on return.
It is clear after tasting the wine today, I was clueless and my initial assessment was way off. I clearly did not “get “ what this wine is all about. On the nose Chablis’esque with some reduction that eventually blew off. In my mouth, so much going on. Wonderful concentration and balance with a constant rotation of saline , stone fruit, apple and creaminess. All of this swaddled in vibrant acidity. — 16 days ago
I like this in smaller sips, spread out over time. Complexity and nuance that need some focus to check-in. And a prick of sweet that gets you satiated pretty quick. Needs a few days to shine, but it gets there. Begins with racy, dank diesel, smoked lemons, dill pickle, cracked black pepper flakes suspended in honey. Ends with salty mineral laden finger limes and sweet starfruit. Best enjoyed with patience, over a week. — 9 days ago
Big surprise! The scent was floral, violets and perhaps some green herbs. But the first sip… straight pipe tobacco laced by dark blue berry and unripe fig. Where was that jammyness we noticed a few years ago? It drank quite addictive, though. Complex and intriguing. — 7 days ago
