El Coto de Rioja

Gran Reserva Coto de Imaz Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2012

This is very good! Black cherry, black raspberry, licorice, with nice acidity and tannins. Pretty well balanced, long finish, easy drinking. Strong oak influence, but tannins aren’t out of place. Interesting to see the variation on ratings for this one. — 23 days ago

Macán Clásico Rioja Tempranillo 2015

This is very rustic and austere Rioja. Dark purple color. Good nose with with red fruit, leather, cedar, and cassis. On the pallet the fruit is dialed way down, and the oak and earthy flavors dominate. It is full bodied, high alcohol, with medium plus acidity and a dry medium tannic finish. IMHO it lacks integration but very drinkable and will punch you in the face again and again. Very powerful wine. — 5 days ago

Viña Albina Reserva Cenicero Tempranillo Blend 1964

A wonderful bottle. Gorgeous deep plum fruit, black cherry, damson, bloodiness, violet. Some secondary notes of leather. Inky. Astonishingly fresh for a wine over 50 years. Dark and rich in color. Crystalline. An exceptional bottle. — 14 days ago

Viña Bosconia Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2009

From 80% tempranillo, 15% garnacha and 5% carignan (mazuelo) and graciano. Clear deep ruby color with brickorange hue; Complex elegant nose of herbs, dill, potpourri, oak, dried cherries and figs, and chocolate; mature taste with a bit of bitter almonds, dried mulberries, powdery tannins, medium acids and alcohol, prominent oak profile, and a long leathery finish. Perhaps some brett here. — 2 days ago

La Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri

Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2010

This feels big and international for Rioja. Purple plums, black cherries, a hint of plum/apricot kernel and some sweet cocoa. None of the transparency of the more traditional producers like LdH or La Rioja Alta. Dense, tannins a bit chalky. Time won’t hurt. — 8 days ago

Viña Tondonia Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2008

This was our red wine selection for dinner at Corvino Supper Club and my first experience with the 2008 Tondonia. We let this sit in a decanter for about an hour while we enjoyed the Raul Perez “Atalier”. No formal notes due to the setting but I recall that it starts a little green (not all that unusual for young Tondonia). Red cherries, harissa, zatar, and dill on the nose. So fresh! Red cherries, earth, leather, and ferrous minerals on the palate. Medium+ acid, medium+ tannin. Lovely. — 13 days ago

Imperial Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2015

Deep Ruby, aromas of sweet red and black fruits with pepper spice and oak. 4 grape blend from some of CVNE's best vineyards in the Rioja Alta (85% Tempranillo, rest Garnacha, Mazuelo & Graciano), aged in both French and American oak for 24 months. On the palate flavors of blackberry and currants with licorice, vanilla, tobacco & toasty oak tones. Soft full ripe tannins, wonderful balance, lively acidity on a long finish ending with an earthy mineral character. Very nice! Tried several bottles! — 6 days ago

La Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri

Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2011

An intense and big boned Rioja this is.
Nose of oak, vanilla, dark fruit, plums, leather, smoke, cocoa. Very nice palate of chocolate covered cherries and licorice. A Rioja of great depth and length. Want some more please…

Real de Asua Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2016

A very decent Rioja, somewhere between the modern and very traditional.
Fresh, ripe cherries, a touch of tobacco, cigar box, a whiff of herbs.
Great balance on the palate, very fine, dust like tannins, juicy acidity and a generous dollop of ripe fruit with a touch of vanilla and roast meat as well.
Fresh, juicy, complete and quite elegant.
A perfect match for a flank steak!
And, on top, this closes down after the first pour, so clearly has some years ahead. At 12€ - this is a steal!
