Clos Mogador

Clos Mogador

Priorat Red Blend 2010

Medium intensity ruby medium wide ruby rim . Pretty open , spicy , blackberry , dark plum . In the mouth pretty dark , spicy blackcurrant , blackberry , dark plum , touch of floral notes . Quite high acidity , tannins still very present , long and complex , touch of mineral , cocoa and coffee notes . Alcohol slightly noticeable but doesn’t detract from the overall experience . Ok now though will improve over the next 5-10 years . After a while deep and closed , more chocolate richness . — 22 days ago

René Barbier i Sara Perez

Dido Montsant Macabeu-Garnatxa Cartoixa Blend 2020

Opened in a family group in Catalunya Spain with no formal notes. Made by the redoubtable Rene Barbier where we having a tour at Clos Mogador this coming Saturday. One of those lovely luscious Mediterranean whites with a skinnsy bitterness with a low acid profile. A blend of Macabeu, Garnatxa Blanc and Cartoixa. Peachy notes in the profile. — 4 months ago

Vall Por Priorat Red Blend 2004

Purchased at winery: legit Priorato here with that schisty style, took forever to open, disintegrated cork, and I almost lost hope - eventually yielded stunning eclectic & complex nose of dusty minerals, cherry & blackberry compote, medicinal, spice, a hi-toned note, really evolving. Smooth rich luxurious on palate, great density & mouthfeel, tons of minerals & red & black fruit w/just enough acidity to balance it all out. Persistent finish. This isn’t their hi end bottling, and it isn’t Clos Mogador or anything like that, but this is absolutely Priorato with some more life ahead. — 9 months ago

Gratallops Priorat Red Blend 2017

HIJACKED Developing deep bass notes of Smokey black fruit punctuated by a charming burst of dried fig in the back of the palate. Potent, voluptuous, and yet very well structured and dry in the finish; tannins are well distributed and evoke a pleasant tingle. With air, curious exotic spices present in the bouquet and once more in the finish - Asian anise, warm roasted peppercorns… and perhaps a kiss of turmeric? Thank you Brandon for sharing. — 2 months ago

Com Tu Montsant Grenache 2018

The 4th and final wine in the tasting yesterday at Clos Mogador. Montsant to the north provides the Priorat tasting experience without the expense of Priorat. This was 100% Grenache. A bright maroon in colour showing red fruits of strawberry and also pomegranate which carry through onto the palate with a touch of cinnamon added. Good value and great for current consumption. — 4 months ago

Gratallops Partida Bellivisos Priorat Grenache Blanc 2017

The 2017 Gratallops Partida Bellvisos Blanc is a wine from the Priorat couple René Barbier Meyer (Clos Mogador) and Sara Pérez (Mas Martinet). It's a blend of Garnacha Blanca, Trepat Blanco and Viura (Macabeo) from 65-year-old vines. The appearance is coppery white close to rose, but no oxidation. It’s a powerful wine, ripe, spicy and some anise. — 6 months ago

Clos Nelin Priorat White Blend 2019

At the Clos Mogador tasting at the winery yesterday. The fact that it was 3rd in the lineup after 2 full bodied reds was no accident This full bodied delicious white more than held its own. A golden yellow in colour - fermented on skins in a combination of vessels including clay amphora. Could be drunk now or last for 20 years. Rene Barbier recently opened a 2000 for the staff and it was stunning Josep said. Notes of dried peaches and tangerine peel. Very mineral. Dense on the palate with great weight. 85% Grenache Blanc with 15% many other varieties. — 4 months ago

@Peter Sultan Worth seeking out Peter. Should be available in the USA.

La Vinya del Vuit

Rene & Co 2015

Delectable this is a 100% Carignan made by Clos Mogador. This is actually the back label but the front label makes the wine even less recognisable. At Clos Mogador for a structured tasting - this is the first of 4 wines. Aromatic red and blue fruits - cedar and graphite. A big full bodied wine at 15% ABV - ample earthy tannins but enjoyable to drink now. The acidic soil ( from limestone) - fennel and liquorice notes. My notes had delicious at the end. Carignan needs plenty of sunshine to ripen effectively as it does in Sardinia. — 4 months ago

@Ray Vanderhoff @Peter van den Besselaar Josep from Clos Mogador got back to me and Delectable pretty much got it right. He said “La Vinya del Vuit” 2018. Also known as V8.
