Château Angélus

Château Angélus

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classe Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

Wow this is why I need to make money. Lucali SG 1:1, had this with pizza and calzones like an animal. Coffee chocolate leather black fruit oak/ vanilla… all the good stuff. I never really had a first growth ever. Smelled Napa at first but I feel as it softened it became a lot more mellow. Reviews say eucalyptus and I’m finally starting to understand that — 4 days ago

Château Cheval Blanc

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

Delectable Wine

The 2014 Cheval Blanc does not convey the same sophistication and panache as the Angélus. This is more rugged and earthier, quite powerful with pencil lead and sous-bois aromas developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, plenty of blackberry laced with cedar, mint, fruitcake and white pepper notes. It finishes with some style and it feels very long on the finish. I just think that unlike Angélus this is going to need several years to really knit together. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. (Neal Martin, Vinous, March 2018) — 4 years ago

Château Bellevue Mondotte

St. Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

Chateau Angélus acquired a 50% share in the company. 100% Merlot, deep purple with aromas of black fruits, spice and earthy notes. On the palate flavors of savory fruit, plums, blackberry & cherry with licorice, tobacco and cacao. Chalky fine round tannins, well balanced ending with mineral and earthy character. — 3 years ago

Château Fonplégade

Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

2014 vintage. This historical estate with great terroir surrounded by famous neighbours like Angélus, Ausone, Pavie etc. is going from strength to strength after it was bought by Denise and Stephen Adams (also owners of Château L'Enclos in Pomerol and ADAMVS in Napa Valley). 2014 vintage. 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Biodynamically farmed (since 2009, certification in 2020). Intriguing attractive nose with an amazing minerality, intertwined with cassis and a hint of truffle. In the mouth it is initially a bit severe, if classy. I would recommend decanting or taste it over several hours. After a few hours the fruit shines through compensating the tight tannic structure and the acidity. Built to age, I feel this will deserve a higher score in 5 or 6 years. It's a very classic restrained wine that definitely has an understated class. Nice value at under 50 euros if you like this style. — 2 years ago
