Really come out of its shell. Meaty, feral and minty nose. Also so much limestone and it’s so prevalent. Such a great nose. 50% N Rhone, 50% Baden. Palate is fresh and energetic with terrific intensity and gorgeous early season blackberry fruit and just insane juiciness. Powdery tannins and extraordinary fruit character. This is an easy 9.5 and will only improve over the days and hours. Now this is something with air and had a glorious velvety texture and melty tannins.

Exuberant nose. Cassis, olive, meat, berry fruit. Complex and initially funky but it gets so pretty after air. Spice. Limestone imprint. Palate is concentrated, intense and so pure. Juicy, playful, complex and tense. Elegant and so balanced. Such a greet mar Syrah. Just nothing else like it. My score will go up with air.

Got so deep and rich overnight. 9.3 to 9.4. So good and such an undervalued wine at Ziereisen.

Olive, spice, dark berry fruit, lavender, floral, meaty, savory, feral element, what a sick nose, soft yet substantial, these big but delicate tannins, long sappy fruit, loads of mineral, so elegant, so mineral, sweet, salty and mineral.

Umami City here. Nose of grilled meats, berry fruits and limestone. Minty, menthol. So aromatic. Lifting aromas. Unique. Sweet and savory at same time with groovy grippy acids and such depth. Greasy yet high acid with terrific sap and purity. The purity is insane.

Wow. Amazing. German Syrah. Not my mother’s red. Not anybody’s mother’s red. Replete with super interesting depth of character in its dark fruits. Man, what a great wine.

Plummy with some spice. Maybe some faint blueberries. Very mouth coating. Deep with licorice on the finish. Not sure I would guess Syrah blind. More like a dark pinot. Not huge acid but sparkly on the palate.

That’s the great thing about Ziereisen. He makes some of his wines from foreign grapes and they taste great but unlike anything you’ve had.

I thought that this was corked but the aromatics are fine after 45 minutes. So if you smell some mist it’s not corked. Chill out and it will blow off. Nose has some lovely spice.

Bought from Fass selections.

.... ok as this opens more it’s getting whack. Internal aromatics are explosive. Deep dense plums. Intense spice that literally cluster bomb all over your palate. Wow. A German just outsyrahed 95% of the Rhône. I may just bail on life and live next to Hanspeter. All hail hanspeter.

Spicy, high tone, tart, cool purple fruit. More extracted and inky than I’d expected, and fairly firm tannins. Great balance, but seems a bit closed. Maybe will develop with time

By far the best vintage for Ziereisen Syrahs ever. What a wine. Incredible nose of spice, blackberry, some sweet wood, limestone, chalk, dry stone dust, red berry, cocoa and more. Just so complex. Deep, elegant and super pure nose that keeps changing. Just so damn impressive. Palate is deep, fresh and incisive while also showing great acidity and structure. This needs to flesh out as it is painfully young but it is all there. Palate is more red fruited than the black fruited nose will lead you to believe. Enormous concentration and already showing great complexity. Boy does this need air and boy is this impressive. I’ll be back.

Still a 9.4 today. Round, ripe and majorly structured. Sappy and dense but still major structure. Great wine. Needs 5 years. Then def 9.5-9.6. This is a 9.4+.

Haven’t had since July 2019. Wow what age has done to this wine. Totally transformed. An absolutely glorious nose that just screams limestone. As it has aged it has become less northern Rhone and more of the limestone soils of Efringen-Kirchen. There is a core stoniness that is just stunning now. Floral, meaty, olivey but so restrained and cerebral. This is just so on point aromatically. At 7 years old this is in a perfect aromatic place. The palate is pure silk. So nimble, juicy and delicate. Amazingly pure. Green olive and dark berry fruit that brightens up on the extended finish. A light touch of sweet oak adds a sultry allure. It’s seamless and effortless on the palate like silk with structure. As the acid and tannins are there to ensure at least 10 more years. Super long, complex and sweet finish. Genius wine. My last bottle. It’s is amazing the quality of Syrah from Ziereisen. Outrageous value. Sold this for under $30.

2018 vintage. Very concentrated. Good balance between fruit, earth, and spice. Black fig, blackberry, grilled herb, rocks, olive, black pepper.
