It is time for my #FridayCabernetfix.

Deep purple/ Inky in color with a short purple rim.

Fruity nose with black fruits, tobacco, vanilla, licorice, cedar and chocolate notes.

Full-bodied with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and fruit forward on the palate with blackberries, black currants, sweet cherries, black plums, tobacco, cedar, licorice, vanilla, spices, chocolates, herbs, light earth and peppercorn.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and cherries.

This young Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley is starting to drink very nicely now. Elegant and rich.

Fruit forward with nice complexity and a soft mouthfeel. A good sipping wine. Balanced and easy drinking.

Still young and needs a few years in the bottle to mature properly. Will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years. Has ‏good potential to become a 94+ point wine.

Good right out of the bottle, and better after an hour of airtime.

A blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, 1% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot. Aged in (50% new) French Oak barrels for 20 months. Unfined and unfiltered.

14.8% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

$45.

If this isn’t the first commercially released vintage for Whitehall Lane, it’s gotta be close to it. With the help of Durand, I was able to extract the cork intact and decanted about an hour prior to service. The 1981 pours a deep garnet color with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with some sediment. On the nose, the wine is surprisingly developing (still!) with a mix of ripe and desiccated fruit with brambles, tobacco, green bell peppers, leather, cocoa, earth and baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry and the structure is still firm but well integrated. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and a touch savory. What a lovely, surprising bottle! Well-stored examples can be enjoyed now and over the next 5-7 years.

Deeply extracted, purple. Vegetal-dominant nose. Not much else. Palate adds a little vanilla, wood, and some bitter cherries. Quite serrated. Not well-integrated. Disappointed, considering past experiences with this producer.

Solid Napa cab for every day drinking. Good fruit and finish. Found it for $30/bottle in 6-bottle quantity; good deal at that price.

Burns a bit on the back end. Heavy fruit aroma. A bit light on the palate.

Ok. Nothing to write home about. Drank harsh and alcoholic. Might get better with age. Glad we tried especially for the price but would probably skip.

A blend of 84% Cab Sauv, 13% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot & 1% Malbec. Deep Ruby with aromas of black fruits, sweet floral spice and jammy scents. On the palate flavors of blackberry and black cherry flavors with vanilla and nutty spices. Good structure, fine juicy tannins, medium+ finish ending with an oaky sweet fruit character. Drink now.

Quite a surprise for a ‘98. Good balance. Intense flavor and full color. Long finish. Perfect with lamb osso buco for Easter.

While yummy it seems to be lacking precision and blind could easily pass for Chilean Cab or a Syrah. Blue flowers and ripe blackberry fruit. Ultra ripe smooth tannins. It’s an enjoyable wine, don’t get me wrong, but it lacks mojo
