Probably would have been better years ago but still drinkable

More focused than the Boulay MD I recently posted. But after three bottles of (relatively) high end 2018 Sancerre, I’m thinking this vintage isn’t for me.

Grapefruit with really a quite tolerable level of feral cat pee. Kind of closed, quite acidic and a little thin compared to the last time I tried this wine (forget which vintage, but loved it, so bought 3 bottles of ‘16). But there seems to be some complexity that’s either nascent or waning... or both...hard to tell. Hopefully an awkward phase in the bottle for a leaner vintage of this wine?... time might round the corners?

Nose is defined with musky melon, quince, and gooseberry notes, lime peel, green apple and plum. Flinty and grassy undertones but this is really showing its youthful fruit right now. Palate is brisk but offers some great round, creamy texture to break up all that zesty and focused acid. Still tense though, matches nose but rides more of the salty/mineral and herbal side, departs with a burst of crushed oyster shell. Can really sense the exposure of the “Les Monts Damnés” hillside. Malo really adds dimension and richness, and there’s an impression of lees integration. May not touch the depth and complexity of Cotat or Bouley bottlings but the price makes this punch above its weight for sure.

Needs time! Ripping acidity!! Some mineral inflected citrusy fruit!! Wait on it

Rather full-bodied and sturdy in this vintage. Not terribly aromatic yet but showing excellent concentration and finesse across the palate, fruit becoming fleshier and weightier with air, finishing with spearmint and coriander flavors. Solid mineral backbone.

Silky, elegant texture. Mont Damnes is always a pleasure.
