Jan 8th, 2024Goodness me, a truly breathtaking wine is the 2019 Taaibosch Crescendo, only the second vintage of this estate resurrected from the former Cordoba winery, a South African legend in itself. Is Taaibosch destined for similar renown?
On opening, this wine is hugely effusive! Just the sort of wine you want to sniff for hours on end…there are wonderfully fresh aromas of black fruit, graphite, pencil shavings, as well as tomato vine and menthol. After an hour’s decant, the fruit begins to prevail, inky and saturated, with some lifted notes of lavender and vanilla. It’s already a profoundly complex wine, and that’s before taking a sip. I’ve just endured my way through dry January - who knew I could be doing this every night?
The wine is drop-dead gorgeous in the mouth, somehow exceeding expectations, fanning out like a peacock’s tail across the palate with every flavour delineated in precise fashion. Precision is a hallmark of this serious, complex wine which is a blend of 65% Cabernet Franc, 26% Merlot and 9% Cab. Sauvignon from Stellenbosch. A triumph. 96+

Bit fresh (2020), will need to lay this down a while to develop.
Deep maroon colour, dark red fruits on the nose, high tannins, ripe plum with a bit of freshness.
