Bone Rock James Berry Vineyard Syrah Grenache
The 2012 Saxum ‘Bone Rock’ Syrah (WWB, 95) is a stunning wine which shows tremendous verve, terroir, weight and intensity, with an exceedingly long finish. The wine is sourced from the Bone Rock block of James Berry Vineyard which is a steeply sloped site planted to head trained Syrah. Amazingly enough, while terracing they found fossilized whale bones when they were digging and needed to use jack hammers to plant the vines. It is not surprising that the flinty undertones impress alongside a deep core of dark currants, wild blackberries and pipe tobacco flavors. The brightness and length of the wine adds to the drinking enjoyment. Showing beautiful poise and elegance, the 2012 ‘Bone Rock’ Syrah will continue to provide drinking enjoyment over the next ten to fifteen years. Drink 2020-2033

Feb 20th, 2020After couple of hours decanted, this gorgeous bottle of #Saxum Bone Rock's aroma wafted around the counter: Blackberry, cassis, smoke, dark berries, licorice and a sweetness that only powerful #Syrahs offer. So complex. Love what comes out of the James Berry Vineyard. #SaxumVineyards

2 people found it helpfulJun 2nd, 2014Cedar and tar on the nose. Black rasberry fruit, white pepper, the end cut of of a herb crusted roast. Dense, chewy and substantial. Almost all the elements are there but there was an ever so slight chalky, sour milk after taste that keeps it from reaching the upper echelon for me.

Jul 8th, 2017Decanting. Still a bit tight. Gritty Syrah. Mourvèdre pops as wine airs. Vanilla came on strong over time. Tannins softened into a lovely experience.

Oct 29th, 2015After dinner pop and pour and it needed time to open that I did not provide it. Have some in the decanter for a post Masters re-visit tonight. Last night this was super tight and just too hot for me. My guests loved it and raved. Interim rating.

Apr 12th, 2015Managed to get the dregs of this bottle. Savory bacon, dark fruits and saddle leather. Meaty, rich, black fruits with mocha and graphite flavors. Firm tannins and lingering finish makes this one of my favorites of the evening.
