Pio Cesare
Barolo Nebbiolo

Double-decanted several hours prior to dinner and subsequently enjoyed over the course of a few hours. The 2012 Classico pours a deep garnet color with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with ripe notes of red fruit: cherry cordial, candied nuts, red flowers, some leather, rich wood and some warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with high tannins and high acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+. A very good, albeit modern expression of Barolo from a solar vintage. Personally, I find pre-modernist Pio Cesare more exciting. Thanks Andy! Drink now with patience and through 2042.

Yum! Aging very well. Dark fruit, light body. Firm tannins soften with air.

Winery located in Alba, the Piedmont region was founded by its namesake in 1881. Great Grandson, Pio Boffa, continues the tradition of innovative wine making. ‘12 was a difficult but PC did well. Aromas of fresh dark berry fruits & herb notes. Cherry, plum and minty flavors, some licorice and cacao, well balanced with young tannins. Complex lingering finish ending with nice earthy notes. Enjoyable now but needs more time.

Classic Barolo. Cinnamon, cardamom and anise on the nose. Tart cherry, rhubarb, and wild strawberry coat the palate. Smoke and red berries round out the finish. Nice change.

It's Barolo, and it's a baby. Never really showed off.

Lighter bodied than expected with dusty rose and forest floor on the nose. Good acidity and moderate tannins with dried cherry and raspberry fruit flavors. 2012 received 94 points from James Suckling, I believe. Excellent pairing with Toma restaurant rack of lamb in pomegranate glaze (Santa Barbara).
