The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is rich and darkly alluring with a pleasantly rustic touch, as a burst of crushed black cherries and autumnal spice is lifted by suggestions of mint and white smoke. This opens with a lovely inner sweetness, showing remarkable purity and enveloping, plush textures as ripe red and blue fruits swirl throughout, guided by vibrant acidity. A tactile mineral tinge lingers along with gently grippy tannins as the 2016 tapers off with a sour sensation that keeps the mouth watering as a savory herbal thrust slowly fades. This bottle isn’t showing the purity of previous experiences, yet remains a killer Brunello. (Eric Guido, Vinous, December 2023)

Popped and poured; enjoyed with Wednesday night dinner of leftover ragu and tagliatelle. The 2008 Pertimali BdM, pours a deep ruby color with a nearly opaque, turbid core progressing out to a more orangish color with a watery rim. Medium+ viscosity with very light staining of the tears and signs of fine sediment (hence the turbidity). On the nose, the wine is vinous with notes of ripe and desiccated cherry, curaçao, black tea, leather, porchini, Italian herbs, dusty earth, and spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannins and medium+ acid. The tannins are completely integrated at this point. Full-bodied. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and satisfying; and a sublime accompaniment to our meal. The 2008 is in a really great place right now (if you appreciate mature wines) and should maintain for at least a few years. Drink by 2028.

Showing really well. Allowed to breathe 30 minutes. Earthy nose of tomato leaf, balsamic and sage. Plenty of depth and good weight on the palate. Powerful and ripe style of Brunello.

Decanted for 3 hours before dinner. Dark, opaque color - darker than the Barolo next to it. Really nice nose. Notes of dark fruit, leather, tobacco leaf, old desk and some dried violets. Nice weight and texture in the mouth. Surprisingly bright and tasty finish. In a great place. Give it air!

Dark and opaque. Closed at first but opened up with air. Notes of black fruit, some menthol, some wood and some moist black soil. Nice in the mouth. One dimensional though and not particularly exciting. Probably needed more air.

Taken to Enzo in Carmel. Dark reddish tawny with some amber in the rims. Nice nose that seems slightly sweet for a brunello. Dried cherries, earth, plum, some cigar leaf and wood. Not overly complex in the mouth but fruit and structure are there. Nice round finish. Decent. Don’t see this getting better with more age.

Bright red cherries with a touch of pencil lead, brightly floral with some rubberyness.
