Bin 28 Shiraz

Toasty new oak, ripe black fruits, structured, just a touch of heat in the finish, I’ve been buying and drinking the Bin 28 for over 40 years, I know it’s no longer all Barossa fruit, but it’s just so consistent and always very fine!!

Rich, lush and ripe redfruits, nice bit of new oak frames the fruit nicely, still seems pretty young, medium-long finish, I’ve always loved this cuvée!!

Black fruit on the nose. Blackberries and cassis with some spice and black pepper in palate. Went well with grilled chicken pesto pasta and bone/in strip steak

Feb 19th, 2023Bold hint of cherries and oak flavors … easy drinking and quality for the price. Would recommend letting it have some air.

The nose shows some oaky notes and barrel aging scents like cocoa, coconut, oak. I understand this is American oak, giving it a new world touch I'm not yet familiar with in shiraz/syrah. I can smell the usual markers I associate with the varietal too : blackberry and pepper, but the barrel notes play a prominent part. The palate is big and bold : blackberry and pepper notes show up all along a great acid backbone but what strikes me is the width and matter which is superlative when compared to northern rhone wines I'm used to. Also there seems to be a bit of residual sugar. Some tannins kick in in the rear, leaving a quite strong drying layer that continues with the finish for a very long time. In the end you can still taste that blackberry note, those oaky, coconut notes and these drying tannins, but eventually a bitter note pops up and adds another layer to this. This is probably much too young and it's very muscular for now but I want to revisit in an older vintage or with a bit more age on it.

Smooth and robust; lots of vanilla, tobacco, cassis, and blackberries on the nose. Long finish.

(“Kalimna” no longer appears on the label of the famous Bin 28, I think because it’s no longer sourced primarily from that vineyard.) Dark purple-red color, lovely oak to go with the redfruits and black fruits, seems just a tad less complex and “Barossa” since the last vintage I tried (2004?), very good but not quite what it once was!

Aug 28th, 2022Rich fruity nose. Plum, butterscotch, apricot, pepper nose. Fruity forward, full bodied, velvety, chocolate flavors. Lightly spicy and soft tannins. Delicious, complex wine. Would definitely get again!
