Paul Anheuser
Niederhäuser Riesling
A good grower’s basic Riesling QbA should be enjoyable young but also capable of aging well, even in a very hot vintage like this one. I’ve had many 20 to 40 year old vintages from Anheuser and they’ve almost always been excellent. Quite youthful yellow-gold color. Earth and flinty minerals to the nose. Good structural balance with the sugar well hidden in the long finish.

Nov 22nd, 2020Not sure how Riesling can get much better - incredible depth of flavor, aromas, and nuance. Ginger, honeysuckle and white pepper. Bashful despite it’s age.

Jan 29th, 2020At nearly 35 years old, still bright. Apricot and beeswax. A wonderful Spatlese. March 2023.

Mar 29th, 2023A fun, bargain Riesling with a bit of age on it is exactly what’s needed right now. A stately light lemon color in the glass. The nose is subtle for quite some time upon opening but you get a bit of white flowers and the promise of honeysuckle. After a bit of air, there’s a whiff of petrol and lavender. Apricots and honey abound here and earthy notes take you on home. A really nice, chill bouquet.
At 20 years old, this baby is still alive and kicking. All possible rough edges have been smoothed out over the decades and you’re left with a Riesling that’s just so relaxed and pleasant. The acid has chilled out and the structure and balance are still intact. In the mouth, the citrus fruits are pleasing and the earth omnipresent. This is one of those bottles where the end surprises you because it goes so fast.

What a delight to have an aged Riesling! Acid level smoothed out by age, honeysuckle, white flower blossoms and just a tiny hint of petrol.
