Mommessin
Clos de Tart Grand Cru Pinot Noir
The 2006 Clos de Tart was one of the better wines from Sylvain Pitiot's era. It has evolved a little since my last tasting in 2018. The broody black fruit on the nose still oddly harks toward Bordeaux. It's not as tight-fisted as before. The palate is structured with a lot of substance; what it lacks in elegance, it compensates with sheer bravura. Perhaps it just lacks the precision on the finish to compel you back for another sip. This wine is for those who seek Burgundy Grand Cru with body. (Neal Martin, Vinous, June 2024)

The Mommessin monster. I tend to only like this wine in “lighter” vintages where the heavy handed style gets balanced out. But 2018 shows impressive freshness, vibrancy and minerality to combat the warmth of 2018 wonderfully. But of course so so young.

Oct 27th, 2023Deep fruit. Floral and expressive and very pretty on the nose. The oak in a good place. Black cherry, roses, plum, spice. Very good and balanced. Yum

Jun 30th, 2023Decided to check in on this. Deep dark purple, opaque. Fruit intensive nose. Notes of peppery kirsch, some wood and herbs, and a little soil. One dimensional and still primary, even on day 2. Rich and powerful in the mouth. A bit hot too. Just short of age 20, I’m not sure where it’s going. Probably could say that about many 03s right now. I wanted to like it more but it didn’t move the needle that much. Gave it a lot of air and it didn’t budge. Might check in again on this in 10 years.

May 6th, 2022So pure and clean with multiple layers that peeled back differently in the glass as it warmed up. Plum, black cherry, black tea. Lonnnng finish. This absolutely needed 45 min decant to open, strange given the age.

Feb 5th, 2022Remains one of favorite grand crus. Gentle, rose petals, raspberries, peonies. Drinks beautifully but will benefit from another 5 years of cellaring. Very elegant.
