Morgon, Beaujolais, Burgundy, France
Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour. The 2021 “N” (Sans Soufre) is identical to the standard Morgon except it’s bottled without the addition of, you guessed it, sulfur. It pours a slightly dull ruby color with a translucent core; medium viscosity with light staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with gorgeous notes of fresh and funky dark cherry, strawberry, raspberry, licorice, red flowers, some horse blanket, green herbs and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium with lovely minerality. In a year that is often maligned (not by me), this was absolutely gorgeous. You just kept wanting to go back to the glass and smell it. Drink now through 2036, probably.

Oct 12th, 2025Notes for 2018 ‘N’ (no sulfur) bottling - not hitting for me! The 2016 N is one of my favorites but the couple of bottles I’ve had of this vintage have been off the mark. Jammy one-dimensional fruit, not much acid or structure to speak of and a washed out sorta messy finish. Oh well, still looking for more 16s!

Much nicer than my prior experience, which gives me certainty that that bottle was off (the risks of no sulphur).  pretty with lots of light brambly fruit, spice and mineral undertone, but for me there’s a lot of added subtlety outshadowed by the moderate funk
