La Spinetta
Gallina Barbera d'Alba
Alba, Cuneo, Piedmont, Italy
Currants and spice on the nose, bright raspberry with signs of oak on the palate. Took a while to open up.

Very deep color. Very ripe on the nose, with some VA/stuck fermentation notes, chocolate, even some earthy truffle. Very ripe, plush fruit on the palate, very sweet, saved by good acidity. Bears the mark of a hot vintage and seems like the winemaker lost some control here.

I like my Barbera a little more approachable at this age, not this is a fine example of the modern style.

Never tasted this bottling before, I just hoped for a decent showing. Instead, it completely reshaped my view of Barbera.
Deep opaque garnet with a slight tawny rim. The nose is captivating with blackberry jam, fig, cedar, dry pine cone, worn leather, clove, and a hint of truffle. Seamless palate - full body with vibrant
acidity, supple tannins that still have firm grip, and a velvety texture. Long, elegant finish. Still has 5–8 graceful years ahead. By far the best Barbera I’ve tasted.
In Rhino I trust.

A little bit of curry on the nose, edging into black currant. Fruity and light, with strong tannin finish.

May 20th, 2025Bit of a revelation for someone who’s never loved Barbera. Smokey, plenty of fruit, some forest floor. Excellent acid & length. Drank with burrata ravioli & salsiccia. Lovely.
