José Michel & Fils
Cuvée du Père Houdart Brut Champagne Blend
Now called homage this is a solera, champagne with the juice going back to the early 70s . Powerful , vibrant and vineyard driven with some secondary nuances from the older juice . Hard to find this kind of complexity for the price.

Mar 14th, 2014This is exactly what I wanted it to be. A stately shade of gold with few bubbles and a nice mousse. Such pretty aromas of spice on the nose along with roasted nuts, ginger, and cigar smoke. Apples with lemon and limes. Dried cherries and a touch of oak just to continue to elevate things.
Where to start? 40/40/20 PM/PN/CH from Moussy. But the real info you want and need is that this is primarily composed of reserve wines from 1971, 1975, 1976, 1982, and 1984 with the remaining 40% from the 2012 vintage. Those old vintages really make a difference here. Fresh while elegant. Refined yet lively.
The palate is nutty and yeasty. Nice tension with zippy acidity. You can tell this has a long life ahead of it so maybe you want to let it rest for a few years. Or you can open it and have fun.

No formal notes. Brioche, mushroom-soy accord. Brilliant start, faded quickly.

May 23rd, 2021Notes from 3 hrs open. Lovely oxidative style, but good freshness to complement. On the nose: honey, marzipan, lemon oil, a shimmer of copper. On the palate, lovely mousse, fantastic acidity, very focused on the palate, with floral honey and lemon. Very clean finish.
