Jean Paul & Charly Thévenet
Vieilles Vignes Morgon Gamay
Catching up on my notes. This was much better than the last bottle. Enjoyable, but it was crazy that this Gamay felt heavier than the Nebbiolo on the table. In its defense, it was up against Luca Roagna’s deft touch (see my notes on the 17’ Gallina). Despite its hefty structure, the Thevenet Morgon still had plenty of energy. Whole cluster goodness and plenty of red cherries. The palate was full-bodied with a supple texture. It had a touch of candied “sweetness” but plenty of acidity to keep things lively. Finished spicy with suggestions of minerality. One to revisit on a better occasion.

May 23rd, 2024The nose is a tug of war between absolutely gorgeous, ripe berry fruit and barnyard stank. Lots of sweet spice too. In the mouth, it’s Dr. Jekyll first, with a big initial whack of ripe, zingy berry fruit, but, just like flipping a switch, some serious biology takes over. I’m not sure it’s brett or something else, but a flat, funky sour wet cardboard thing takes over through the finish. It might be good for my gut biome though, so there’s that. No score for now, and I’ll wait to see if the funk either blows off or takes over.
UPDATE: 90 minutes more air and it’s undrinkable. Clearly flawed

I love these Thevenet Cru Morgons but they need a lot of age on them. The 2022 today has beautiful fruit on the nose but underwhelms on the palate. I feel like they add fruit and intensity as they age. NB it’s helped a lot by a long decant - even this young. Ps did adding Charly to the label take something away?

Nov 29th, 2024Stunning. Needs time to open. Whole cluster no Carbo aromas. Very Burgundian. Creamy soft delicate palate. Savory salty with crushed berries.

Jul 28th, 2023One of my favorites from La Paulée’s “low cost” Off the Grid tasting. Cru Beaujolais by Jean Paul Thevenet, one of the four members of the “Gang of Four”. Gamay from 70-100 years old vines. Aged for 6-8 months in old barrels. Perfumed nose, aromas of red fruit. Structured, serious wine.
