Deep red purple in the glass. Abundant nose of belt leather and ripe plum. Full body on the palate which yields plum, leather, and a bit of white flowers. Next to no tannins and medium minus acidity combine with the up-front fruit to make this a great wine for spicy foods. Hot chili? Spicy picadillo? Generally capsaicinous meats? Here’s another go-to red!

Dark red purple in the glass; color to the rim. Cassis and belt leather on the nose. Medium full body and juicy, medium plus acidity on the palate. Flavors of ripe plum, saline minerals, cassis. Lengthy bright purple finish. Horton does wonders with this native North American variety. More should know about it.

Man I just love Norton - it is such a fun, expressive wine. It’s loud & boisterous and downright unruly, but it’s uniquely American. Inky and brimming with black fruit galore & then menthol, medicinal, licorice, forest floor, squirrely spice just pour out of the glass. So expressive. On the palate it is voluptuous w/plenty of acidity & tannins, it’s just a bit clumsy, but it means well. Black fruit compote with kitchen sink spices envelope the palate. Decent finish. Don’t know what the hell you’re supposed to eat with this stuff but it’s a lot of fun.

Deep purple hue. Aromas and flavors of black cherry, bread, forest floor, licorice, pepper, and smoke. Medium body, with medium-plus tannins and medium acidity. A complex, elegant nose. A hint of Brettanomyces with a smooth, easy palate and a long, steady finish.

Nice young cab franc from VA. Leather, cassis and vanilla, yet surprisingly mild tannins. An everyday wine that could pair well with many foods. We had crab cakes.

The Norton grape. Expressed in this winery as a huge luscious nose, into a sharp high acid long and bright. One of those special wines where the nose dies nut match the flavor profile. Still, enjoyable. Better with food.

Interesting rare grape -- Norton. Notes of plum and smoke. Medium-bodied and off-dry. It's soft on the palate and seems like it's going to be sweet, but then it doesn't finish that way. Glad I got to try a Virginia wine.

Tart berries. A little rubber like a pinotage.
