Heitz Cellar
Anniversary Vintage Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
Lovely. Still in great shape. That minty tangy front end with spectacularly supple fruit still. Really good stuff.

Jan 8th, 2020Almost perfect but perfection does not exist.
What is striking here is how balance and integrated and youthful this wine is. Had it twice and I cannot see this wine going down. This is the equivalent of Mouton 82 for California. It’s muscular, right, beautifully crafted, oak is integrated, tannins are sublime, beautiful cassis cream, and blonde tobacco. Eucalyptus, tobacco, peppermint are flagrant on the nose .
This is monumental.
One of the very best wines I’ve ever had. BRAVO! #wine #california #heitzwinecellars #1974

The legendary ‘74 Heitz Martha’s from Magnum in the wine cellar room at the Angus Barn in Raleigh, NC. This delivered on the promise of the advance publicity I’ve heard for years. I recall reading an article about the ‘74 years ago that said this was the first vintage that David Heitz was the main winemaker. Joe had back surgery and was even hospitalized at some point so David would bring samples to his bedside and get advice. Each and every thing you enjoy about this unique winery is in this bottle. Eucalyptus, tobacco, mint, herb, cherry and tart rhubarb pie, menthol, cedar and forest floor. Still dynamic and spirited at 40+ years. A remarkable, rare treat.
The photo above the bottle shows the color variation between the ‘74 (left) and the ‘70 (right) and those hues were indicative of the wines themselves. The ‘74 was energetic with silky red fruit, the ‘70 more brooding and chewy.

Such a grateful recipient of the generosity of my host here.. Hadn't had this in a few years, but I'd say after revisiting last night, it remains the finest California wine I've had. This bottle showed a bit soft right out of the gate, but it became incredibly expanded and powerful with air - the fruit sweetened up and the herbal notes were amazingly intense and pungent. Texturally like thick velvet. A legend for a reason. Hard to say how much life left, but definitely not going anywhere for a while - solid as a rock in the glass for 2 hours. #amazing
