Located in Vilaza, Galacia, this estate location has Mencia vines up to 50 years of age. The wine was aged in French oak for seven months and then in the bottle for additional three months. The freshness and soft texture are really great, as pink bubblegum, Bing cherry and red raspberry mingle with garrigue and damp earthy tones on the palate. Fantastic in its youth, this bright Mencia wine will cellar well over the next eight plus years. Drink 2021-2028- 90

The fruit for this wine was the second selection from the sorting table (third if you count the crows that are known to take their share from this vineyard). Pure black fruits, seeds and all. Fine tannin and decent acid. Turned out to be a wonderful pairing with our paella courtesy of the Hunger Block (Omaha). Definitely a quaffer but has enough of the right things in the right places to keep things interesting.

Dark blue and black fruits prominent on the nose and palate, with additional rich and toasty aromas, dark cocoa powder. Balanced acid, tannins and minerals on the palate in a soft body with teeth coating chalky minerals that linger on and on.

Wowza, this really over-delivered for $20: inky no sign of age on rim, effusive dark fruit, brooding ripe black & blue berried mingled with spices, cocoa, dried herbs, minerals, hoisin - blind I would have guessed Mourvèdre from Southern France. Great extract & density of flavors on nose & mid palate, cut a broad swath, smooth rich, finely grained tannins balanced seamlessly. Bit less acidity than Mencia from Bierzo, but enough for the smoked ribs devoured alongside this gem.

Mencia and I were only acquaintances for far too long. I know palate preferences evolve and all, but why haven’t I been drinking Mencia regularly all this tome? I love wines that balance power with elegance and this “Fraga do Corvo” from Gallegos has that in spades. This record speaks for itself. A bona fide classic start to finish. It takes some major self confidence to be on your album cover in your robe and Harry knew this record backed it up.

Decent fruit, not bad with ME food. Rather simple with some brett and a nice bitter note on the finish.
