Dec 29th, 2021My wine tonight is the 2017 Gaja Ca'Marcanda Magari. This is from the Bolgheri region of Italy. This is a blend of 60% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot.
The nose has notes of sweet strawberry, cherry, raspberry, spice, mint, menthol, brambles and crushed gravel.
On the palate there is cherry, raspberry, sweet strawberry, green bell pepper, cassis, black currant, herbs cedar, chalkiness and crushed gravel.
This wine is medium to full bodied that is velvety and a medium + acidity and medium + to high grainy fine round tannins that move seamlessly to a long red fruit dry earthy finish. These wines come with high price tags and high expectations. I’m being tough on it but I had it in one of my favorite places on earth - the Big Island of Hawaii. It’s just not that pleasurable. Hard angles - drying textures - bitter finish. Other may appreciate it more.

Spectacular Super Tuscan Red! Blend of Cabernet Franc (60%), Cabernet Sauvignon (30%) and Petite Verdot (10%). Dark Ruby color with a slight garnet rim. Aromas of dark berry fruit, red and purple flowers, fresh and dried herbs and a nice earthy component. The lush palate includes flavors of black cherry/currant/raspberry along with savory herbs and dark chocolate. Beautiful mineral note on the extremely long finish. Quite intense, powerful and grippy but also very smooth and silky at the same time. Wonderfully complex. Outstanding!!
