Great wine in a not so great year. Lighter than usual but incredibly elegant with beautifully integrated tannins.

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva has gained significantly in richness and volume since the last time I tasted it. Sage, black cherries and camphor give way to crushed stone, mineral tones and dusty rose. This soothes the palate with silky, delicate textures, as ripe mineral-tinged red berries and savory spices cascade across a core of brisk acidity. It’s a well-muscled dancer of a wine, tapering off incredibly long and graceful with hints of violet and rose over a coating of fine tannin. The 2015 currently shows the textbook ethereal weightlessness of a classic young Poggio di Sotto Brunello, but it will require some time to reveal all of its charms. That said, a slight score upgrade is in order here. (Eric Guido, Vinous, December 2021)

Outstanding wine in a super vintage for brunello. Silky, smooth, tar, lead pencil and Provençal herbs. Long Finnish.

Very pure, rich fruit. Dark berries, cherry, mocha, some sour notes. This is very integrated and complete. Some gorgeous savory notes that’ll probably open up in time. Very good.

Poggio di Sotto only produces their Riserva Brunello only in exceptional vintages, and the 2013 is an absolutely brilliant release from this renowned estate in Montalcino. This is beautiful Sangiovese Grosso comes from 20+ year-old vines which are planted to rocky marl soils that are farmed biodynamically. The Riserva is aged for 5 years in 25 to 35-hl Slavonian oak botti, and 1 year in bottle prior to release. The result is a stunning expression of Brunello that begins to impress with striking its purity and gorgeous aromas of dried wild berries, crushed flowers, spices, white truffles, leather and hints mineral nuances all taking shape in the glass. On the palate this medium-bodied red is about balance and precision, while displaying outstanding structure with remarkable focus through the long, lingering finish. While the 2013 will require some additional bottle age before it becomes fully accessible, it certainly possesses the potential to have an incredible evolution and extremely long drinking window ahead. Year after year Poggio di Sotto's Riserva is one of the finest Brunello’s made in all of Montalcino, and the 2013 is certainly no exception.

Damn, man. Don't sleep on Sangiovese! Meat and leather, with all the cherries and enough palate weight to perfectly balance the mouth watering acidity. Just the barest hint of volatility to add complexity and remind you that we're in Tuscany, not Burgundy. Complete and compelling.
