El Coto de Rioja
Gran Reserva Coto de Imaz Rioja Tempranillo Blend
La Rioja, Spain

Found a ‘14 hanging around. Deep Ruby with dark fruit aromas, herb and spicy pepper notes. On the palate blackberry and plum flavors with notes of black pepper, cacao and earthy spice. Savory ripe tannins on medium finish ending with fruit and earthy herb notes. Just ok, drink now past it’s prime!

Deep Ruby with dark fruit aromas and sweet baking spice notes. On the palate blackberry and black cherry flavors with notes of cinnamon, cacao and earthy spice. Savory full fine tannins on medium finish ending with fruit and forest floor character. Good value. Tasted twice.

Fist, the Gran Reserva is significantly better than the Reserva. Deep Ruby with dark fruit aromas, oak and toasty spice, has 10% Graciano in blend. On the palate plum, cherry and blackberry flavors with notes of leather, cacao and vanilla spice. Savory ripe fine tannins on long finish ending with fruit and tangy oak. Tasting Sample.

9.1-9.2
As much as I try to avoid oak juice, this is totally worth drinking now, or better yet, holding onto for 3-5 years.

Nail varnish violet nose, full red berry and light rose middle, almost no tannins until a good 30secs in but this is my second rioja of the evening... simple but deep.

What a find! The most elegant cigar box notes ever, subtle spicy fruit woven into a beautiful core. Star Anise, beautiful earthy, spiced cedar. Attack is soft and develops across the palette with an integrated acidity that is amazing. This wine defines structure. Very light elegant tannins.

Nov 15th, 2016Dark ruby color with a cranberry colored meniscus. Intense aromas of tobacco, wet soil, graphite and dried purple flowers with a subtle black fruit note. The savory palate also is full of tobacco, bramble, dried citrus, black tea and baker’s chocolate with just a bit of black berry/cherry/plum fruit. Hint of baking spices on the medium finish. Very low acidity and little in the way of tannin. Probably a bit past its prime but still quite complex. Extremely earthy and dense. Better with aeration and with food. Also better the second day.
