Whites and reds from our recent Confrerie Saint Etienne dinner. I was fortunate to take home the last bottle, and I’m glad we have a few extras to keep hidden in the CSE cellar for a few years to see how they age.

This was paired alongside a Gustave Lorentz Gewurtztraminer Reserve, with the food being Lemon Sole. Wonderful pairing. Hardly any whiff of petrol here…more tropical than anything (guava, green pineapple), lemon and limestone. On the palate, this is one of the more commanding and deeply rich Alsatian Riesling’s I’ve had in a while. It’s nervy down the mid-palate, but really fleshed out on the sides…big time balance. Mineral streak, and total Alsatian vibe to it, but all dialed up to 11 (in a good way). Even over the course of dinner, this improved. Still on the upswing.

A fun combo here; 2015 & 2001. Both tasty with the ‘15 quite lean and classic and ‘01 rich, yellow and textural.

That wonderful petro, a bit smokey, spice and stone fruit. M+ acid, m body, lush long finish. Numerous layers and beautifully complex.

Anjou pear, quince, high toned but subtle lemon zest, lime, Apple skin, flinty and smokey nose. Lean and mean palate, that is incredibly saline and briny. Medium bodied, high acid, medium minus tannin. So complex, intense, and delicate. Want to retaste in 20 years, when it will be sublime.

2002. Chewy dried tropical fruit and stones. Viscous and floral. Heady stuff.

A luscious and richly layered wine. Definition of heady. Considerable RS that comes across in the density it has on the palate. Personally feel like the phenolics and minerality help balance the sweetness. Normally I think Alsatian GC wines are introspective enough to drink and contemplate on their own but this was a knock out with sausages and went even better with Alpine and Robiola cheeses.
