Domaine William Fèvre
Montée de Tonnerre Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay

I read an article recently where the author felt that this 1er cru probably deserved to be a Grand Cru. Whilst this was very good I think it is right at Premier Cru. Initial notes were salinity amongst the apple, citrus flavours and a touch of beeswax. The following night tasted more “new World “. This was very enjoyable but needs to develop more complexity. I will leave my remaining bottle for a couple of years.

Citrus, crushed shells and vanilla. Very very pleasant and quite serious as well. A little young but why not?

Nose is green Apple, citrus, almost lime, rock, has a vegetal quality that Chablis can have sometimes when it’s really minerally strong. Typical salinity there. Rounder than the 2014 and much more approachable. Less acid but acid still moderate. My favorite 1er Cru vineyard in Chablis.

So closed, even after decanting. Perhaps in a shut-down phase? Although these are usually approachable young. I couldn’t get anywhere with this one. Will check back in a year.

Way, way tight and even after sloshing around a decanter for 3 hours it never opened the way it should. Too young to pop right now. The stuff is there, but lurking behind the couch, in the corner, with the lights off, wearing all black, and not moving...

Nose of a flinty lemon, palate has a wee bit of tropical fruit peeking out, oak is blowing off still. I'll update my notes as the wine opens.
Two hours in the wine is revealing.
Nose has waxy citrus skin, struck flint inside a new oak barrel that's also filled with grapefruits.
Palate has papaya, clean crushed minerals, bruised golden delicious apple, fading oak with limestone dust. Long finish, medium acidity.
