Domaine Jean Royer
Le Petit Roy Red Rhône Blend
Back for the 20ème année (20th year) release here. Ruby red, very good clarity. Funk and figs in nose. Flavors: cola, funk; raspberry strawberry and cherry on finish. Seed tannins unresolved after 30, 60 minutes but fun and easy to drink while you are waiting. Definitely figs in the aftertaste. I’d stock a few of these away and replenish every year. If you must drink French reds, why not start here? Yummy

Jun 18th, 2022Pale ruby. Nose offers balsamic/pine needle, bittersweet blackberry pips, Connecticut grown cigar wrappers tomato leaf and oolong tea. Completely unlike any other bottle I've had of this wine over the last approx 10 years. Light bodied, medium acid, medium minus tannin. Long echoing finish of that savoury/malty oolong tea reappears.

Mar 3rd, 2022That dang glitch is back where if the phone sleeps while evaluating a wine, the app resets..
So take 2 - Fun wine. The end.

Nice, pure, high-toned cherry/raspberry fruit in the nose, along with some stony minerality. Almost reminiscent of a garnacha for Navarra. Nice concentration and balance in the mouth. Not complex but pure. Some chalky tannin. Nice pizza wine.

Jul 17th, 2019Smells of an old dusty cellar,
Stocked with oozing pots of fig jam.
After a couple of hours this shows really well, medium body, juicy, dark dried cherries, tarragon, Focused blueberry. Fruity in the best of ways, wondrous mouthfeel, full, and all encompassing. This is really grabbing my attention. Old world, rustic terroir, this is like a high $$ Cali wine. Wow, and yum. Gonna grab at least 6 more of these.

Purple-red, light-to-moderate extraction. Butter, barnyard and red fruit notes in nose. Raspberry, black pepper, black currant and mint flavors. Soft acidity. Moderate but high density skin astringency, mild seed bitterness in finish. Tannins need aeration time, softening. 24 hours later, flavors go flat fairly quickly despite Vacuvin use. Somewhat disappointing wine with its transient flavors. Drink up quickly once you open it.

Oct 25th, 2018Lighter and simpler than other vintages I've had. Grenache dominant.

Sep 18th, 2017Day two. Hints of white pepper, touch of new leather, brambly blue fruit that carries into the beautifully textured palette, very fresh and round. Nice soft acid. This wine is a STEAL.
